| REVIEW: |
I was probably unlucky on the day that I went to Mizuho. It was raining and there was not alot of snow on the run. Since it is very well-known as being one of the best resorts in the area, I expected to have more options on runs. For some reason the only run that was available was the main run which was not completely covered in snow. Lots of grass and dirt was visible. The run was also very narrow. It was also raining hard that day and since I got soaked, I spent alot of time inside the lodge. Usually, I would have pigged out but there wasn't many options. There was only one restaurant and by the end of the day, I had exhausted all of the food options. However, I'm sure that if there had been a big snowfall, it would have been better. |

| PROS: |
1 hour away from the city, decent choice of runs, good priced, and you can take the bus there! |
| CONS: |
Slow gondola |
| REVIEW: |
I have been to Mizuho about 4 times in the past year, and I like it! I have also been to Osorokan and Geihoku, and Mizuho is my favorite of the three.
My one complaint is the first gondola. It's an old, slow 4 seater gondola that takes a long time to take you up to the top. When you arrive, or come all the way down, you have to take the gondola back up. It's a waste of time. It would be much better if they updated to a 6 person high speed lift to get people up faster, and spead out to the other runs. |

| REVIEW: |
Mizuho revisited. This place kicks ass for western Japan. First time here on a weekday and like everywhere else, there is hardly anyone around. It dumped for two days before we came, so the snow was excellent for mid-March. The advanced runs have good terrain and enough length. The rest of the mountain is pretty wide open and good for beginners. Modern facilities with warm, clean toilets and decent restaurants, etc... It doesn't have the shabby run down feel of the Hyogo resorts which is good if you're with the wife and kid and want a decent place to hang out and enjoy a little family time (baby room and no-smoking sections, friendly staff).
Although it's not my gig, they do have a fun-looking half-pipe and board park. This place has room to expand and open up even more terrain -- I hope they do it. |

| REVIEW: |
I agree with the other reviews -- this seems to be the best in the area.
Good terrain for boarders, with some trees and steep runs to be found. Didn't see any patrol and I saw a lot of tracks in places that your average small town patrol man would have a fit over.
Great access (5 min.) from the interchange without the usual road danger. Didn't get it after a dump, but it sure looks like fun if you can score. |

| REVIEW: |
West Japan, the oft neglected "poorer cousin" of snow areas host some interesting fun resorts. Mizuho is one of them.
Dumps of powder are common and if you follow the weather reports a great time can be had. There are enough runs to keep most folks happy for a day and I've watched a few skiers and boarders venture off course in the untracked. Ski patrol never seems to be about. I'd say over the last 3 years the skier / boarder mix has moved decidedly in favour of the latter (maybe 70% - 30%) and all seem to be pretty mellow. Haven't spotted any of the "fascist skiier / board pigs" as yet. Out west here fun is cool.
Excellent restaurants, hi-speed quads, gondola and the longest run is 3.5k'z. The valley side is definitely "slushier" than the mountain, but is less crowded and has wider runs.
Unfortunately there is one downer about this otherwise top little number - the prices. Carpark, lift tickets - day & 1/2 day - kids nursery, etc. suck it up BIG. But 1st timers will be pleasantly surprised. Check it out. |

Agree with Ichiro-san on this one. This place is not in the Japan top 10, but it a good choice for people who want a good day out and live in the region. |

It is generally accepted that you kiss decent skiing goodbye anywhere south of Hiroshima Prefecture but there is a relatively excellent board/ski experience just an expressway drive (1.5 hr. from Hiroshima interchange) in Shimane Prefecture- Mizuho Highland Ski Area.
Yeah, yeah I know there are those out there that think Geihoku Kokusai rule but I don't appreciate the seemingly endless drive after getting off the interchange for any other ski areas!
As a past season pass holders of Naeba (Niigata), Nozawa Onsen(Nagano) and Mammoth Mountain, Mizuho may be smaller than other areas close to Hiroshima, but for a one-day commute it's great.
The 4-person gondola and high speed lifts are state-of-the-art and the main lodge, valley side lodge are beautifully designed by the original owner/operator. No bungalow piece-meal planning here. Overall a tasteful presentation.
Lastly, the ice-crushing capability to provide sufficient cover early and late in the season if more than adequate.
If you live close to Hiroshima, Iwakuni, Okayama, even Kita-Kyushu- Mizuho Highland is the way to go! |
