Snow and weather reports posted on Friday 20th April 2018
Wednesday 12th April 2017, 7:54am
Looking up at Kitanomine the grassy areas have been coated in white this morning. It is currently snowing/sleeting in the village and there has been 2cm of snow accumulated on gardens. The amount of fresh snow should be significant on the ski runs at the top of the resort. The snow is expected to continue through until tomorrow evening. There is fog on the mountain that extends to just above base level so visibility will be fair at best. A light wind is blowing but will pick up later in the morning. Read more ...

It wasn't long after my report that spots of rain started falling and it was rather wet in town - though there was actually some fresh snow on the ground just a bit higher up.
I was woken up by some fairly heavy rain on the roof around 6am and unfortunately it's still raining now here in town.
Kagura are reporting snowfall for the day in the higher areas, with rain down to the Mitsumata Ropeway. Alas, wind is affecting Kagura operations again this morning and they are open from the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 romance lift at the start of the day (Tashiro is closed).
Both GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu Kogen are reporting rain early on but they are opening as normal.
It looks like we can hope for the rain to stop and somewhat clear up this afternoon.
Temperatures are going to remain fairly low - in single digits - today and tomorrow, but come Friday things are expected to warm up quite a bit once again. Perhaps some sunny skies too for a nice weekend.

Hey, how about this - might I be able to report some new fresh cm of snow tomorrow morning?
I may well be able to, and wouldn't that be a very nice bonus for mid April. Different forecasts seem to be predicting different things, so let's see what happens. I will of course report to you in the morning.
For now, it's kind of wet snowing in higher areas and wet down in town with lots of cloud and limited visibility.
I need to get this report up now so please check with the resorts for the up to date on lift operations.

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Wednesday 12th April 2017, 8:24am
Good morning from Nozawa Onsen.
It's raining this morning... but might there be a bit of snow to fall up top over the next 24 hours? It's going to keep colder than it has been today and tomorrow as well, before things warming up once again from Friday onwards.
You can still ski or snowboard back down close to the Hikage base area - from where you can get on a shuttle bus back over to the base of the Nagasaka Gondola if you want to get back up top. Snow conditions are better higher up though, so I expect that most people will be staying up there for most of the day.

Yes, it was snowing up on mountain yesterday and by 3pm Hakuba 47 were reporting 10cm of snow on their upper areas. Hakuba Happo-one are also reporting 10cm of fresh snow at the top of the Grat quad lift. The snow depth numbers at Tsugaike Kogen have also risen this morning.
Remember, these are not my observations - they're what the resorts are reporting.
While there's no fresh snow to report from down at base, it definitely sounds like today it will be worth a trip up to the upper courses that remain open to check out that fresh snow.
Looks like the forecast is for clearer skies as the day goes on too.

Cloud, light rain
Good morning from Grandeco.
Some snow fell yesterday but it turned into rain again this morning so there's no fresh cm of snow to record.
Still, there's 250cm of snow depth out there and snow cover remains complete with no ground showing at all on the courses.
Rather wet snow conditions, so in that respect good and slippery! Rain should stop falling in the morning and some sunshine might appear in the afternoon - waxing will be important!
Weather will be calm with some sunshine for several days after the skies clear up.
Ski hills remaining open in Bandai area : Grandeco, Nekoma and Minowa.
- Gondola - Number 1 quad lift - Number 2 quad lift: * Now closed * - Number 3 quad lift - Number 4 quad lift: * Now closed *
90% courses remain open Lavender A and Mint B are closed The Snow Parks are now closed

Shiga Kogen Now!
Wednesday 12th April 2017, 11:52am
Cloud, fog, wet snow
Morning from Shiga Kogen, where winter-like weather has made a comeback!
Yesterday there were some strong winds blowing about and snow falling. All a bit mad.
It was very wet snow (I think rain is closer) earlier on in some places, but back to snow and there's a lot of cloud and fog around as we approach lunchtime. And wind too.
Not the 'kindest' of weather conditions, for sure. And not the kind of conditions we expect as we approach mid April either.
The official Shiga Kogen site is saying 10cm of fresh snowfall this morning from yesterday. I measured 8cm, so that is what is on the report.
Things should clear up by tomorrow morning at the latest and we should be warming up a fair bit by the weekend.
Official snow depths numbers reported by different areas of Shiga Kogen:
Please note that these numbers are the official numbers that ski resorts publish.
Lift and resort closing dates - it's complicated! Please note that from 8th May, joint Shiga Kogen lift tickets are not valid - individual tickets from the individual areas will be required.
