Snow and weather reports posted on Monday 29th May 2017

Good morning sports fans.
The forcacst snowfall yesterday never materialised, we just got fog at higher elevations. This weather continues this morning, the broken clouds are sitting at around 1000m, making for low visibility at the peak but nice weather elsewhere.
The slightly warmer temperatures continue today, with a low of -8 reported at the peak. The wind is currently 18km/h at the peak, lower than forecast.
This settled weather looks like it will continue for the next few days, spring is definitely knocking on the door. Read more ...

Clear blue skies and sunshine
Almost completely clear blue skies early this morning as the spring weather continues.
Everywhere should be open today and it should be a fine day to be out and about, getting quite mild later on. Similar conditions are expected over the next few days at least.
And with that, I really don't have anything else to report this morning. Well apart from this...
3 more nights of nighta - the last one on Monday, a national holiday here in Japan.
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Mountain base : -6°, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -5.5°, W5.1m/s, sunny, no new snow, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -6°, N7m/s, no new snow. Hirafu 1250m, -9°, no new snow, light westerly winds, no new snow. Coastal data: Kamui Cape: SW2m/s, 1019hPa, wave 0.5m.
We are under influence of high pressure system bringing sunny weather. A hoar frost layer has formed on the snow surface at elevations below 600m. As the temperature increases the risk of full depth avalanches on steep south facing slopes is also increasing. Gate 11, Mizuno no sawa, is closed from today due to the high possibility of block or full depth avalanches around the 700m level. Do not enter the south facing strictly off limits areas Haru no Taki, Yuno no sawa. All peak gates are expected to be open.
Snow conditions are hard in the morning but should be softer by 10:30am. In springtime be aware of snow bridges over creeks, they can collapse easily and the water is cold. Out of bounds areas are out of the ski area and not controlled. There is still lots of snow, have a fun weekend.
Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day):
Night skiing is planned until Monday 20th March 2017 at the Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village resort areas. There is no nighta in the Hanazono area.
Planned closing dates Niseko Grand Hirafu plans to be open daily until Sunday 7th May. Niseko Hanazono plans to be open daily until Sunday 2nd April. Niseko Village plans to be open daily until Sunday 2nd April (and then from 28th April until 7th May). Niseko Annupuri plans to be open daily until Sunday 7th May. Read more ...

Clear and sunny
Good morning from Hakuba on this first day of the 'long weekend', Monday being a holiday.
And what a start!
Nice and cold early on with clear blue skies and sunshine.
Probably some hard conditions out there early on but with the sun warming things up things should soften up. A chance of a bit of snow overnight (?) but tomorrow also looks like it will be similarly clear and sunny.
I am going to go and make the most of it!
See you tomorrow...

Good morning from Yuzawa.
Looks like Kagura is reporting 3-10cm of snow (Mitsumata > Kagura) and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting a dusting. It looks like GALA Yuzawa have added 10cm to their official snow depth as well - so a bit of snow at higher elevations though there's no sign of fresh snow down here in town.
They still have close to 4m of snow up there, which is well over double what they had this time last year. Not bad at all!
This morning there's a lot of cloud around, a bit of blue sky in places and the sun has been out (though not at the moment).
Last chance for nighta this weekend at a few resorts...
Official snow depth information as of Saturday 18th March 2017

Lots of blue sky, sunshine, some cloud
Good morning from Naeba.
The resort is again reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow up top this morning, so you know where to head!
Right now the sun is out with some cloud. A lovely spring morning again and a fine day to be out on the skis or board.
The forecast is showing the chance of some fresh snow perhaps around Tuesday-Wednesday in the coming week, but before then we should enjoy more of this clearer weather.
Monday is a holiday in Japan so it's a long weekend and a fair few people expected to be here.
Hope you can enjoy it.
Here's how the rest of the season is planned for Naeba:
- open daily until Sunday 2nd April; - open on weekends and holidays between Saturday 8th April until Sunday 23rd April; - open daily from Saturday 29th April until Sunday 7th May
Nighta will continue daily until Sunday 26th March. Read more ...

Sunny blue skies
It's the start of a new weekend and a long one - probably will be a popular one too... and the fine weather will help on that score.
Yes, it's fine blue skies and sunshine here in Madarao this morning.
Fairly chilly early on but it should be warming up a bit in the sun, and snow conditions will go from icy early on and soften up as well most likely.
Nighta tonight and tomorrow night (and then one more time next Saturday).
There's just 16 more days of the season left to go here including today.
Madarao Kogen plans to be open until Sunday 2nd April.
Operating status for the day at Madarao Kogen (at time of report):
- Number 1 lift - Number 2 quad lift - Number 3A lift - Number 5 lift - Super quad lift - Number 11 lift - Number 12 lift - Number 13 lift - Number 15 lift - Moving walkway - Kids Park - Free Ride Park - Snow Mobile Land
- Powder Wave I - Powder Wave II - River Line - Powder Theater - Adventure Aisle - Crystal Bowl - Ninja - Sawa - Rabbit - Kamoshika - Bear
- Remaining nighta at Madarao Kogen - Saturday 18th, Sunday 19th and Saturday 25th March.
There's lots of people coming up for the weekend this morning with a steady stream of cars going past at the moment.
There was some light snow early on this morning but things have cleared up and now the sun is out and there's an increasing amount of blue sky too.
Generally fine weather conditions are forecast for this long weekend (Monday is a holiday), though there looks like there might be a return to some snow around Tuesday. A fresh layer of snow will certainly be welcome by then.
In the meantime, enjoy the long weekend!

Fine spring weather
Fine weather conditions here in Zao this morning.
The sun is out.
It might get rather mild down here at base today though even at closing in on 10am the top area is reporting a temperature of -7C... so it's still cold up there!
Expect more fine weather over the coming days - right now there's not much in terms of snow potential on the weekly forecast.
Enjoy the weekend! Monday is a national holiday in Japan and so it's a long one.

Cloudy skies, sun trying to break through
Hello from Appi,
It’s the weekend again here and we’re expecting another decent crowd given the conditions we have. Right now cloudy skies and a temperature of -2. The winds have picked up slightly overnight and you may get the occasional gust at the summit.
The rest of the weekend will remain the same with partly cloudy skies and fairly light winds. We may see the occasional snow flurry next week but nothing of consequence.
Overall the runs are in great shape still, albeit with a little morning ice that should thaw out by mid day.

Sunny, but with thin high clouds
Sunny again today, but with the high haze/thin clouds we often see on sunny days.
Looks like it will stay sunny through the day, although there's still snow forecast for the coming days. I am adding a little snow to today's fresh; I didn't see it with my own eyes, but there's a light coating on the roof that wasn't there last night.
The other nice thing this time of year is that all of a sudden we have a lot of birds singing in the hills. I think they like that warm sun; maybe they know that dining is going to be a little more interesting soon, too...
