Happy Shunbun no Hi. Another stunning spring day greets the equinox.
After warming up yesterday, the temperature is back bellow freezing this morning. Expect all ungroomed solar areas to have set up with a firm crust. The temperature is expected to increase quickly today, with a high of +3 forecast at the base.
Today will likely be the last day of nice settled weather, there is a weather system forcast to arrive early tomorrow, possibily bringing some snow.
Apparently over 200 people took part in the Madarao Speed Challenge yesterday.
This morning as expected there's blue skies above Madarao and it looks like it should be a fine day.
It's Monday, but a national holiday, so very likely busier than a normal Monday... the 'last ski of the season' for lots of folk, I imagine (including a few friends who are up here for the weekend).
Still looking at snow tomorrow, particularly in the evening, but got to watch out for potential rain before the snow. Fingers crossed everyone.
Madarao Kogen plans to be open until Sunday 2nd April.
Operating status for the day at Madarao Kogen (at time of report):
- Number 1 lift - Number 2 quad lift - Number 3A lift - Number 5 lift - Super quad lift - Number 11 lift - Number 12 lift - Number 13 lift - Number 15 lift - Moving walkway - Kids Park - Free Ride Park - Snow Mobile Land
- Powder Wave I - Powder Wave II - River Line - Powder Theater - Adventure Aisle - Crystal Bowl - Ninja - Sawa - Rabbit - Kamoshika - Bear
- Remaining nighta at Madarao Kogen - today and Saturday 25th March.
And it's another fine morning here. Clear blue skies and sunshine.
Rather lovely actually.
And as lovely as it is, we'd all really like a bit more fresh snow wouldn't we? And actually it's looking like it will be getting colder tomorrow and there's a chance of snowfall too tomorrow and beyond then as well (especially higher up). So we might get lucky!
In the meantime, it is another fine day to be outside and enjoy the spring slopes.
Last nighta of the season tonight - rasuto-chansu!
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Mountain base : -3°, no new snow, sunny. Moiwa 800m: -3.8°, W7m/s, no new snow, sunny. Annupuri 1150m: -5°, N8m/s, no new snow, sunny. Hirafu 1250m: -7°, W7m/s, no new snow, sunny. Coastal data: Kamui Cape: S4m/s, 1020hPa, wave 0.5m.
The high pressure continues with sunny weather today. Below 800m the surface is changing to spring corn snow and even more snow will melt. From observation general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open.
This last week of sunny weather will end today. Tomorrow a low pressure system will move in and snow is expected. If the snow is accompanied by wind, conditions will return mid winter. Snow drifts will form on leeward slopes and could easily avalanche exactly the same way they can in winter. Be careful of a sudden change in weather.
In south facing gullies, including Mizuno no sawa, the risk of full depth avalanches is high. Do not enter these areas. The snow will be hard in the morning but soften up during the day. Be careful of sun burn and sun blindness. Have a good day.
Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day):
Planned closing dates Niseko Grand Hirafu plans to be open daily until Sunday 7th May. Niseko Hanazono plans to be open daily until Sunday 2nd April. Niseko Village plans to be open daily until Sunday 2nd April (and then from 28th April until 7th May). Niseko Annupuri plans to be open daily until Sunday 7th May. Read more ...
Shiga Kogen Now!
Monday 20th March 2017, 8:19am
Fine and sunny
Morning from Shiga Kogen.
The sun is out this morning - it's going to be a fine last-day-of-the-long-weekend.
I'm looking at the forecast for tomorrow night and through Wednesday and it's actually looking rather exciting. 'Heavy snow' --- could it be? We'll just have to see, let's hope we won't be disappointed. Personally I'd rather be surprised by not expected snow than be disappointed at a no-show!
It will be busier than a normal Monday, being a national holiday, but things should be quieter in the afternoon as people make their way back to real life.
Official snow depths numbers reported by different areas of Shiga Kogen:
Please note that these numbers are the official numbers that ski resorts publish.

Fine, hazy feel to proceedings early morning
Hello from Hakuba.
Last day of the long weekend.
Things were a bit warmer yesterday and a bit of wind at times on higher slopes where I was yesterday (Happo).
This morning it's a fine but hazy kind of feel to the early morning. Sunny clear skies are forecast for the day and things warming up to close on double digits later in the afternoon down in the village.
So very much a spring-like day.
Is that snow I see on the forecast for tomorrow...?!

Nozawa Onsen Now!
Monday 20th March 2017, 8:49am
Fine and sunny
Good morning from Nozawa.
Here we are back on a Monday morning, though a slightly different Monday as it is a national holiday - so more people than normal around still. Things should be getting that bit quieter once again from tomorrow.
The resort is reporting 5cm of fresh snow on upper slopes this morning, though there's none to report from down here at base.
Some thin cloud around and a generally hazy look to the webcams up there, but it's nice and clear down here. The sun is out and it should be a fine day.
Snow is showing on the forecast tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.
Nozawa Onsen plans to be open daily until Sunday 7th May

Morning from Yuzawa.
It was raining in town for lots of yesterday, not nice, though by the evening in particular it was snowing and trying to snow closer to town too.
Kagura is reporting 15cm of fresh snow this morning and Tashiro is reporting 10cm -- none from Mitsumata, so it seems just the highest areas have had that fresh snow.
But very good to hear.
Bright and overcast skies at the moment over the region and perhaps things will get a bit clearer as the day goes on.
Snow is there on the forecast during the day tomorrow though with temperatures still in low positive numbers it's going to be borderline with rain; but we'll take wet snow over rain please!
Today is the last day of the season for the Yuzawa Kogen <> GALA Yuzawa <> Ishiuchi Maruyama link-up and special ticket that covers those three resorts.
I was just looking back at some photos from last few seasons. Very interesting to compare them:
By this time last year (March 2015) there was actually no snow left in my the back area of my garden. The year before (March 2015) there was over 2m left. As of today, there's still a bit over 1m in the same place.
Official snow depth information as of Monday 20th March 2017
Kandatsu Kogen 'Hobo All Night' ('Almost All Night' from 6pm-4am) is on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 1st April 2017. Spring nighta (6pm-10pm) on Saturdays and nighta before holidays from 7th April until 22nd April
And yes, there's some fresh snow again. We're doing well! Especially when it was raining quite heavily down in town yesterday; happily we accepted that.
And just look at the forecast too... snow tomorrow. Even decent snowfall? Let's have it!
Less than 2 weeks left of daily operations.
Here's how the rest of the season is planned for Naeba:
- open daily until Sunday 2nd April; - open on weekends and holidays between Saturday 8th April until Sunday 23rd April; - open daily from Saturday 29th April until Sunday 7th May
Nighta will continue daily until Sunday 26th March. Read more ...

Fine and sunny, just a bit of cloud
Morning from Zao.
The sun is out this morning; a fine day is on the cards. But, maybe some snow tomorrow?! We shall see.
Today is the last night for floodlit skiing or snowboarding, until 9pm.
It's always sad to talk about 'the last' of different things, but there you go... we still should have over 6 weeks left of the season here all being well...

Appi Kogen Now!
Monday 20th March 2017, 9:45am
Clear and sunny skies
Hello from Appi,
Another bluebird day here and we can expect sunny skies all day. The temperature right now is -1 outside my door with fairly light winds. The winds should die down this afternoon too making it an ideal photo day. I was out yesterday on the summit and haven’t seem it this clear in a very long time with excellent views of Mt.Iwate to be had off the second runs.
Tomorrow we may see the clouds roll in and bring a few snow flurries up to 6cm. The temperatures may also rise a degree or two but head firmly into the negative territory by Wednesday and throughout the rest of the week.
The slope were a little icy in parts yesterday until the sun loosened them up a little and we had a very large crowd too. Today may be the same with the holiday weekend extending into today.
Bring your camera and come and take some fantastic shots today.

Clear, but hazy
Sunny and hazy again today in Myoko; real spring skiing is here!
Pretty good snow all through the day yesterday; OK, it's soft, it gets near to sloppy... but it is fun.
