The rain did clear up yesterday and it ended up being quite a nice day in the afternoon with a fair bit of blue skies, though it stayed fairly cool.
This morning I was woken up by the sound of heavy rain outside. It was really coming down with some force a while back. It is not as heavy at the moment but it is still raining and seems likely to be for the rest of the day and also tomorrow as well.
There isn't a strong wind at the moment in town but due to forecast strong winds later on, Gala Yuzawa is closed today. The Tashiro area of Kagura is also closed with just the Mitsumata Ropeway, Kagura Gondola and No1 quad lift at Kagura moving this morning.
Apparently it is raining even up at Kagura but perhaps wet snow up at the top there.
Hopefully things will clear up by Sunday.
Official resort snow depths @ 22nd April 10, AM: Kagura: 310cm Kagura - Tashiro: 250cm GALA Yuzawa: 140cm
Planned closing dates at resorts in Yuzawa:
Wednesday 5th May 2010: Gala Yuzawa Kagura (Tashiro Area)
Hammering down with rain here today and low cloud making for a pretty glum viewing outside. Temperatures are still lowish and there was a light dusting up high last night. It looked like it was trying to snow higher up earlier but is raining right now. Visibility is a little challenging at Tenjin today due to the rain and low cloud. Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Thursday 22nd April 2010, 9:58am
Rain has arrived in Nozawa. It has been raining and a wet morning here, with rain falling even up top at Yamabiko unfortunately. It's keeping fairly cold considering the time of year, +5 degrees in the village and closer to zero on the top slopes, but not enough for it to be snowing.
It looks likely to continue raining for the most part today and likely tomorrow as well though hopefully we will see things clearing up for the weekend, especially Sunday.
Current Official Snow Depths Numbers:
Courses currently open (as of 22nd Apr): Yamabiko A course Yamabiko B course Yamabiko C course Yamabiko D course Yamabiko E course Kokenashi A course Kokenashi B course Uenotaira course Paradise course Yunomine A Yunomine B Rinkan course Bunabayashi Paradise link
Lifts currently operating (as of 22nd Apr):
Nagasaka Gondola (both sections); Yamabiko Four (quad) Yamabiko No2 Four (quad)
The last couple of days have been cold, cloudy and wet at lower altitudes with snow falling higher up. Today though the sun is out and it will be a great day on the mountain. The snowdepth, especially up high has remained pretty stable up around 3m. The average snowdepth at the top in Hirafu at the end of April over the last 13 seasons is 2.15m. So it looks like we'll probably remain well above that average. With the rain over the last couple of days some of the fields around Kutchan are starting to show patches of soil so it shouldn't be too much longer now before the farmers can start sowing their crops.
The morning started off with broken cloud over the mountain and blue skies to the east. It looked like the cloud on the ski area may lift and leave us with some nice weather. This has not happend. Currently the low cloud has gone and has left overcast conditons. Read more ...

A bit wet at the moment. Yes, rain is falling, even on the mountain today. Kagura is saying that it is snow up top, but I would guess rather wet snow and it is definitely raining in the Mitsumata area. Still fairly cold though.
There are some winds as well today and because of those only the Mitsumata Ropeway is running today - Tashiro is closed. The area open is from Mitsumtata up to the main quad at Kagura.
It's worth mentioning that the course down from Mitsumata to the car park there is now closed for the season so you need to get the Ropeway back down to the base now.
More rainy conditions are forecast for tomorrow and perhaps chances of rain into Saturday with finer weather currently forecast for Sunday.
We will post Naeba Now weather update reports a few times a week until the end of the season at Kagura. The Yuzawa Now report will continue to be updated on a mostly daily basis - including any information on Kagura as well - so please keep an eye on that report as well for the most up-to-date information.
Official Snow Depths:
Kagura (Tashiro): 270cm
The Tashiro part of Kagura plans to be open until Wednesday 5th May.
The main Kagura area, via Mitsumata Ropeway, plans to be open through until Sunday 23rd May. Read more ...
