Kagura review by Glen Falting
Kagura is a great resort and although Tashiro and even Naeba can be accessed from Kagura, it's at Kagura that the best terrain is located.

If the person is keen there are quite a few tree runs and even the groomed runs are quite wide.

The Kagura Mitsumata Tashiro area beats GALA, Yuzawa Kogen and even Iwappara for variation, quality of groomed runs and access to tree runs and off piste locations

GALA Yuzawa review
I am new to snowboarding this year - hardly ever seen any snow before now - and my first trip was to be taken to GALA Yuzawa with some Japanese friends. I'm not sure if this was a good resort to be at as a beginner, but the views there were spectacular.

It was blue skies all the way, and so much snow! I couldn't believe it! My first attempt was really bad. I thought I

Great beginners hill.

If you really want to learn, this is a good place - just make sure you come on a weekday.

I have been there many times, but I still can't really get to like it a lot

Iwappara review by wendy-cake
After a day at Nozawa, we went over to Niigata and chose Iwappara as the place to go. I've seen Iwappara a few times in summer when I was going up to Niigata to visit a friend and it always looks wide, long and fun.

Anyway, it was a weekday and, like Nozawa, the place was quiet - just as we hoped.

We headed over to the central quad lift and tried that run a few times. The snow was in really

We went here coz we got a deal with the train/ski lift ticket. We are beginner skiers so Nunoba - while very small - was ok for us to practice on before we took the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway up to the Yuzawa Kogen part of the resort.

This is more difficult and we were struggling a bit - the top looks difficult (but most slopes look difficult to us!) - so we took in the great scenery from up there

Naeba review by Adam
I've been to Naeba twice- once for skiing and once for snowboarding, I doubt I'll go back. I'm used to skiing in Canada, US, and Europe, so I find lack of off piste generally annoying especially on skis.

Many Japanese resorts have nice boardparks which make up for their generally flat terrain, but Naeba doesn't even have that so I was very bored there both skiing and snowboarding. If you are a beginner or low intermediate maybe you'll enjoy it,

Joetsu Kokusai review by Adam
Even with the lack of steep terrain and no real off piste areas, I was able to find some very nice powder between trails and on the sides of some trails, it took me almost all day to ski most of the lines thru those areas, of course only one other guy besides me was skiing them, so that lets you know it's nice, but also still very small.

The first morning there I was able ski almost every single

Been here a few times this season, the first time we were caught up in a snow storm.

But this time the weather was good. Excellent snow, and surprisingly the place wasn't that crazy busy considering it was a Saturday at the peak of the season - I was quite surprised. I love this resort, there's a lot to choose from and the snow is almost guaranteed to be excellent - best snow in Niigata maybe??? We usually avoid

Joetsu Kokusai review
I went here once before in terible weather and had a great time boarding through fresh powder on mostly just the one run. This time I had a chance to explore the rest of the field and found myself heading back to that same run. The top runs just aren't steep enough for long enough.

Beautiful place though.

It has a good half-pipe with an escalator! Sugoi

This is excellent for boarders.

Why? Because it has the best snowboard park I have seen in this area yet.

If you're not into jumping etc. then this isn't so good. This is a very small resort and the 2 main runs turn into moguls! And car sick people beware - the drive up isn't so nice (but very interesting).

Much needed snow arrived at last over the weekend, making for some great conditions yesterday.

Good snow and not too busy, especially in the afternoon when most people started their trek back home.

Good resort and awesome when the snow is cooperating!

Another resort in Yuzawa town, this one is just a bit further on than Iwappara and Yuzawa Park (it has it's own little station on the Joetsu local line), and about 10 minutes from the IC.

Bigger than Yuzawa Park, although still not too big - it's kind of stretched into 3 small parts. By far the most interesting is the right hand side that has a few fairly challenging, but short, intermediate runs.

A big more difficult than Park, but still
