Mt. Naeba
The atmosphere of this resort was great.

The only thing I didn't like was how short the runs were.

It's perfect for the beginner skier/snowboarder but not for the intermediate/advanced skier. I only bought a lift ticket to ski the Naeba side since I've been to Kagura before.

Next time I will be sure to ski both resorts since it offers more variety when it comes to the runs.

Naeba: It's pretty big!
Naeba, like I said in the title, is big.

The bottom of the resort is very open and the runs are big. The Prince Hotel is reallllly big. There are many restaurants and shops. There are two gondolas not counting the longest gondola in Japan the "Dragondola" which connects Naeba with neighboring Kagura. It has that big ski resort feel.

I think Naeba is a great place to bring a family; they have daycare, there is a kids room they

A good place
I like Maiko.

Two base areas - the Gondola area and the Maiko area which is literally 500m from the Shiozawa Ishiuchi IC exit of the Kanetsu Expressway. Super convenient.

The Gondola area is where I go. Either take the Gondola or two quad lifts (the quad lifts are the better idea on a busy day) up to the Okusoeji area. The bowl. And that's where I spend most of my time when I go to Maiko.

There's a

Past it's peak
Naeba is of course famous for being famous.

Lots of runs down by the base, getting narrower at the top. Location for a famous ski movie in the 80's (I think). Yuumin concerts. (Fuji Rock Festival, in the summer of course).

The hulking Naeba Prince Hotel at the base is huge. It also feels like it is remaining from some long gone era when the ski boom was on. A real 80's feel, and not particularly in

Muikamachi Hakkaisan

A fine place to visit
Muikamachi Hakkaisan is a Prince resort. But don't let that put you off!

But seriously. Hakkaisan has it's fans and I can see why. It's basically one bit long resort with a few options on coming down. There's some groomed intermediate slopes, the ungroomed quite to form mogul runs and the winding road course down the side. The latter is surprisingly fun as there are lots of 'short cuts' through the untouched snow which is a

Down Home Snow!
This is a great place to come to if you are in the Niigata area or west coast area of Yamagata. On weekdays, you might have the whole place to yourself. There are no "play areas" with jumps etc. for boarders or trick skiers, but for the intermediate skier, it's got plenty to keep you amused. It's on the backside of the mountains that face the Japan Sea, so when Mikawa, Ninox, Tainai and Wakabuna (other Kaetsu areas) are blown

Small place, popular with families
I have been here twice now. The reason I chose this small place was a few friends going and also the fact that all of the bigger places would be crazy busy on the long weekend.

It's a smallish skijo with two 'bases' - Ipponsugi and Yoshisato - both offering parking for free, even on a holiday. I like that. They join up at the top, and the top lift is where the only fairly steep slope is.

Awesome Friday after the New Year at Tashiro
Awesome weather conditions (clear sushine) highlighting the fresh snow the night before.

Spent the day at just the Tashiro section of Kagura (never made it over to Mitsumata area).

Resort was EMPTY till about noon when the crowd showed up (it's new years holiday so no surprise).

Nice groomers (if that's your thing) but one really long flat spot to get to the main runs.

Some opportunities for back country runs in the trees but not extensive.

Joetsu Kokusai

Good for a few times a season
I often visit Joetsu Kokusai each season, so this is a general review rather than for this one time.

It's a sprawling kind of resort, meaning the opposite of compact. The lift system isn't particularly fast either and so you can spend a long time getting from one area to the other. But with planning and knowing what you are doing, you can minimise any of that.

The main base is down by the Joetsu Green Plaza hotel. That's
