Probably the best in Myoko
Although Myoko is really a series of ski mountains, Suginohara is probably my favorite.

On this day, it was a white out which I love beacuse the snow was deep and not many people out on the slopes. 30-40 cm of fresh pow all day, our tracks pretty much covered up everytime we went up the lifts.

At the very top there are some good tree runs if your willing to duck some ropes.

It's also a good entry point

The right hand 'Maiko' side of Maiko Snow Resort
This is a review of only part of Maiko, as I haven't got over to the Gondola area yet.

The 'Maiko Area', I believe it used to be called Korakuen, is on the right hand side of the resort, and just right by the Shiozawa Ishiuchi exit of the Kanetsu Expressway.

We decided to go there as my wife and child wanted beginner slopes, and I was looking forward to checking out the triple lift and Dolphin Course coming off that.

And what

Third visit, did not disappoint!
Rained first day, then turned to snow next day. Bluebird, and a few cloudy days followed.
Unfortunately, the weather is too warm, and snow is depleting.
Skiing at Suginohara was fab, and we made the most of the goog weather when it was here.

Staying at the Alp Resort Hotel (true "skiing, ski out") we could make choices as the weather changed.
This is our third trip to Akakura, so it must be OK

One of the smaller town-level skijo in Yuzawa
This was my first time in Yuzawa Nakazato, having always seen it approaching Yuzawa on the Kanetsu Expressway. With those big kanji letters popping out of the mountain - got to see them close up.

Today has been a warm day and while there's lots of snow it wasn't in the best of conditions.
Still it wasn't terrible either. As you might expect when it's 6C and no new snow in a few days.

So what's it like?

Great to have Kandatsu Kogen back
I also missed Kandatsu Kogen last season.

Seems to have had a slew of different owners for a long time now so hopefully it will be smooth sailing now with MacEarth.

Not huge place but often very good snow and a compact kind of setup.

Pity that Milky Way lift/course is only open on weekends and holidays

Go South, young man (and others)
4th and final day in Niigata. I decided to make it a GALA day.

I was debating whether to drive to GALA or take the lifts up from where I was staying at the base of Ishiuchi Maruyama. Looking into it, I was happy to see that parking at GALA is free (yay!) and plentiful. So driving past the famous phone booth, I made my way to the GALA parking lot near the base station. Which was

Fresh moguls, come and get 'em!
Weather forecast was not the greatest: rain. I hoped it would be snow at the top. As it turned out, while most of the day it was raining at lower elevations, at upper elevations it was indeed occasional, wettish flurries. So that was good. Looking up from the lower base station after parking in the first parking lot, clouds hid the top of the resort.

I didn't realize that the ropeway station is actually up the hill from there. One should

Get thee to the back bowl -- and get there early
Day 2 of the Niigata road trip. And what a beautiful day it was! Clear blue skies, fresh snow from the day before.

I knew I wanted to head to the back bowl, and was advised to head to the gondola base, not the Maiko hotel base. Good thing, too, because all the signs seemed to want to point me to the Maiko hotel base area, and had I not known there were two different base areas, I'd probably have ended

A return to Iwappara
I hadn't been to Iwappara for 10+ years and it was good to be back actually.

Last time I went the Gondola was still working, but it always felt kind of not needed so it's not a huge blow that it doesn't move any more.

I had heard that Number 1 Romance lift off to the right of the top area was closed for a season or two, but that it was back moving this season and indeed it was.

A playful, young resort; The opposite of GALA Yuzawa.
I went to Kandatsu Kogen using a lift ticket I won from the SnowJapan drawing.

I'm an intermediate boarder, having spent 8 days between Colorado and New Mexico over the past few years. Kandatsu was my 8th snow day in Japan this year.

The basics:

It was my first time to Kandatsu Kogen. I came by car and found the resort very accessible, about a 5 minute drive once you reach Yuzawa / Gala Yuzawa area. The parking lot is a little

A good day at Joetsu Kokusai
Joetsu Kokusai is one of the resorts in Minamiuonuma. (Next to Mt Granview, in fact). Just to the north of Yuzawa and about 20 minutes drive from central Yuzawa.

The mountain it's on doesn't look too big, so it kind of looks flattish, but I didn't feel that once I was up there. There's a decent selection of runs and after reading some other reviews saying that planning in advance was recommended I made sure that I went

Early Season riding at Tashiro
Took the second Gondola (Tashiro) Limited lifts and slopes open this early in the season but the snow was soft on the fringes. There is a long flat spot from the top of the gondola to the good slopes so build up speed or you'll me walking.

NOBODY there so snow of the fringes and back country stayed virgin all day. Snow was not quite deep enough to get to all the off-piste areas I like to go but fringes
