Naeba

Naeba review (submitted before 2003)
Naeba would have to be the most commercialised resorts I have ever been too. It is not necessarily overrated in terms of a resort with a few good runs, but night life leaves a lot to be desired and the term "resort" has to have been penned at Naeba.

Naeba has some nice steeps up the top part of the mountain that can be good on the rare days that it is not clouded up there and you can see

Akakura Onsen review (submitted before 2003)
Myoko Kogen is probably my favorite place to board in Japan outside Hokkaido.

The mountain - which is beautiful - has a number of resorts on it, this being one of them.

I have friends who own a pension at the bottom of the slopes here so I have the chance to always go here and enjoy the resort.

What's it like? Well, a good selection of runs to choose from and generally a nice place. If you go for

This place is split into 2 main parts. Unless you like slow lifts and beginner runs, stick to the gondola part (to the left).

Some good long runs here and my fave area is over the top of the hill where there is a "bowl" that gets really good snow usually.

Kandatsu Kogen
神立高原

Kansatsu Kogen review (submitted before 2003)
A nice resort that suffers from a lot of beginner snowboarders falling over in front of you. Keep to the upper and left hand side runs for the best snow and space.

Definitely NOT a two day resort as you can comfortably cover the park in 1/2 a day.

2 places, the really small Nunoba right at town level. A few 100 meter lifts and accompanying runs...for beginners only.

And Yuzawa Kogen - go up the ropeway to the runs. Not that many but more difficult. YK joins up with GALA Yuzawa via a ropeway (and GALA in turn to Ishiuchi), making for a big space!

Kagura
かぐら
Yuzawa Town, Niigata

Kagura review (submitted before 2003)
Originally a yama-ski area, kagura is less 'resorty' than its neighbors in the Yuzawa area. Best areas for tree-runs seem to be in the kagura area (panorama, giant slalom, tashiro renraku course).

It can get really windy up there, so be sure to layer up!

The only bummer is lack of night-hours.

Maiko Snow Resort review (submitted before 2003)
Went here for the first time at the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Good snow, not many people and the runs on the gondola side of the resort were really cool....especially the runs over the top of the hill which I think they call "the bowl". That's where the best snow was and the best runs.

Not too many moguls on the steep courses even which is something to be thankful for. Overall a good place and definitely worth a

One of those "don't go" reviews. Three lifts, longest course of about 200 meters (?), town level so the snow is nothin to shout about.

Basically if you are in yuzawa then go to somewhere else - preferably Iwappara, Kandatsu, Kagura, Naeba or GALA. Don't go here.

More snowboarders than skiers (I counted).

Not very crowded (almost no waiting for lifts when I have been there).

Fun family ski area!

How on earth this place manages to stay open I cannot imagine. 3 lifts, each run about 200 meters long, no people (!).

I went here with Japanese friends who own a condominium right next to the "resort" - so we skied for free - but got bored after, ooooh, 15 minutes!

Muikamachi Ski Resort review (submitted before 2003)
This is a happening ski-jo.

I am a beginning boarder and find Minami to be perfect for my level. I am learning how to carve, cruise and groove on sweet, but short runs. Minami is more of a beginner's boarding zone than any other resort that I have checked out this far, which makes it happenin'. I would love to try skiing here also, but I haven't had the chance yet, maybe next week.

Good carvin' to you all, peace.
