A small resort
A small resort compared to some of the others in the area. Lots of wide areas to play in if you like powder but depends on the weather conditions

Spring at Madarao Kogen
This is a review based on the spring season operations.

It was a beautiful spring day when we arrived at Madarao Kogen. Deep blue cloudless skies and the accompanying views of the nearby resorts is a nice bonus to snowboarding at Madarao.

Although the reports indicated there had been 5cms of snow over night by the time we got onto the slopes all traces had either been scrapped away or burned up by the sun.

The top runs were hard and

Disappointing
We really lucked out this day.

It was the first day of spring lift operations which usually wouldn't be enough to even interest me in considering Akakan.

However, with 5-10cms the day before and about 15-20 cms over on the slopes there was a good top-up. Surprisingly, it wasn't the heavy powder that you usually associate with spring skiing in Japan. The temperatures remained low throughout the day and it continued snowing which meant that the snow stayed nice and

Let's Ryuoo Ski Park
Having planned (and failed) to visit Ryuoo the previous season, I finally made it there this year, courtesy of a free ticket in a SnowJapan Giveaway - thanks guys!

I can keep this review fairly short thanks to the fantastically-detailed review by dyna8800, which is recommended reading for anyone thinking of visiting Ryuoo.

Transportation:-

Travelling from Hakuba, I took the train to Nagano station, where there's a choice of a train or bus connection, though the latter only runs on

Let's Hakuba 47
I'd read some good things about Hakuba 47 (and neighbouring Hakuba Goryu) but when I planned a mid-March trip, I wasn't expecting the snow to be so good.

It had dumped on the Sunday and Monday so, as I was staying on the Goryu side, I had ridden Goryu all day on Tuesday and didn't make it over to 47 until the Wednesday. Although there was no new snow, Wednesday had the best of the weather, with blue skies and

I'd read some good things about Hakuba Goryu (and neighbouring Hakuba 47) but when I planned a mid-March trip, I wasn't expecting the snow to be so good. I was therefore pleasantly surprised (and very lucky) to arrive at Kamishiro station in the middle of a snowstorm!!

Apparently it had been snowing all day though the visibility on the mountain hadn't been great. Early doors on Tuesday and there was some unexpected sunshine on the newly-formed snow monsters in the

Let's Hakkaisan
I came here after winning a free ticket in a SnowJapan giveaway! & though it had rained the day before, I was hoping that meant fresh snow higher up!

I took the 08.00 train from Echigo-Yuzawa station and arrived at Muikamachi station in time for the 08.30 bus to the resort. This is a public bus and cost 410Yen + an extra 100Yen if carrying a board or skis.

The top of the resort is accessed by a super-fast ropeway.

Let's Cortina!
I had heard some good things about Cortina so, with fresh snow forecast, I added an extra day onto my Hakuba trip to check it out.

Based in Happo-one, I took the first (8.50) bus from Happo Information Centre but everyone else had obviously had the same idea and some people couldn't get on the bus! The journey takes about 40 minutes, so you can be on the bottom chairlifts inside an hour of leaving Happo, which isn't bad but
