Oku Ibuki

A popular resort for Kansai folk
Oku Ibuki seemed to be the most popular resort in Kansai on the 30th, there was really no need for the nav system in the car. Just follow all the cars with skis/boards on the roof, they all headed there.

Once there the car parks gave an indication on how popular this place was. Arriving at 8:00am there were already about 750 cars there. (Based on carpark capacity, I didn't count. Total carpark capactiy is 1800)

From the lower carparks there

Untapped Resource
Coming from Iwate prefecture, this resort is almost as close as the bigger resorts like Appi and Geto to Morioka. Like these other locations it cops plenty of snow but not the crowds, perhaps due to the absence of regular public transport.

I went by car, but there is a shinkansen station that would only be a ¥2-3000 taxi from the resort so it's not unreachable. Also there are a number of accomodations nearby ranging from dormitory to pension to

Good Family Resort- Something for Everyone
I had the chance to join a friend in Noheji for a trip to Makado Onsen. While small, the resort is still larger than Kamafuseyama (hard not to be) with more courses and lifts.

The weather was pretty crappy early morning with heavy winds and heavy snow, but by the time we were ready to head out, most of it settled down and made for decent weather the rest of the day.

The lodge itself is very large and has all the

Great Resort for Locals - remote location
The most northern ski slope in Honshu, Mount Kamafuse is a minimalistic ski resort that doesn’t warrant a special pilgrimage to visit, but if you are local to the area, it can become an excellent daily escape from the business of life.

Kamafuse is considered a family resort for the people of Mutsu but offers little in the ways of accomidation that you’d expect from larger resorts. Despite it’s small size, there are several chatlets for overnight stays and a few

Could see the potential
I headed down to Jangle Jungle over the weekend and whilst the conditions weren't ideal it seemed like a pretty fun, youth orientated mountain. The music was pretty good the whole time and there was a DJ booth in the main building so I assume sometimes they have people play live sets. It was just pop music while I was there though.

It's a small resort with only 2 quads and 1 pair lift but from these there was a fair

Cheap, Fun and Parky
Himekayu is a family resort within close driving distance of Mizusawa.

The lift passes are really cheap, with the resort only serviced by two pair lifts, but there was never any line. There was a fair amount of variety in the few wide runs that they have and there were no ungroomed sections so an intermediate-advanced rider would probably get bored here very quickly unless they were keen to get into the park.

The park was the main drawcard for

Mt. Naeba
The atmosphere of this resort was great.

The only thing I didn't like was how short the runs were.

It's perfect for the beginner skier/snowboarder but not for the intermediate/advanced skier. I only bought a lift ticket to ski the Naeba side since I've been to Kagura before.

Next time I will be sure to ski both resorts since it offers more variety when it comes to the runs.

Great place to learn.
The Nanae Snow Park is about an hour from Hakodate and is relative cheap to get to using the local trains. There is a shuttle bus that runs to and from Onumakoen station and the snow park. You can travel from Hakodate to Nanae and back for around 1060 yen.

This is a great place to work on the basics. The runs are varied enough for the beginner to take on a variety of conditions and gradients. And there are a

Small but nice!
Biwako Valley is a small ski area with only 8 trails but it is actually pretty good in my opinion.

The entire ski area was open and there was a lot of snow in the trees. Yes the trails are short but if you read the mountain stats you shouldn't be surprised or disappointed. I went on a Friday so it wasn't very crowded. I'm sure the weekends would get very crowded though. There is only one annoying flat spot

better than you might think!!
Living in Toyama I have always been a bit hesitant to ski here because of the close proximity to Niigata and Nagano.

After four years now I have been there a handful of times and have a new found respect for the mounatins. When it snows the place actually rocks.

Tons of fresh pow all over the mountain and no ski patrol in sight.

Under and to the right of the Gondala and the trees in Gokurakazaka are highly

Long and narrow
I have been to Kusatsu Kokusai twice now.

Basically Kusatsu is one very long skijo. For bottom part is a number of runs, lots of stuff for beginners.

The upper part there's a Gondola taking you on a dramatic ride up to the... yes, the top bit! This top bit was the best part of Kusatsu and where we spent most of our time. The snow was great up there. A few ways back down, though it's more

Naeba: It's pretty big!
Naeba, like I said in the title, is big.

The bottom of the resort is very open and the runs are big. The Prince Hotel is reallllly big. There are many restaurants and shops. There are two gondolas not counting the longest gondola in Japan the "Dragondola" which connects Naeba with neighboring Kagura. It has that big ski resort feel.

I think Naeba is a great place to bring a family; they have daycare, there is a kids room they

White World Oze Iwakura

Quite a large hidden gem.
White World is about 40 minutes from the Numata IC on the Kanetsu Expressway, located in the Katashina village area of Gunma.

Quite a big place and obviously quite popular with the half full car park already early on a Saturday morning, though people were almost all Japanese so it's not got the gaijin crowd yet.

Worth a shufty though as it's got some nice long runs and the snow was great when we were there.

This season there's a new tunnel that

Snow best I have experienced
Just come back from a fantastic week up in Hokkaido and specifically Niseko.
It was my first time there and wondered if the snow could really live up to the reputation.
It did.
We got such consistent and quality snow, it almost felt not possible!
Truly excellent and better than anywhere else I have experienced in Japan.

I have nothing against foreigners, I am one myself, but Niseko is no totally overwhelmed with international guests that it almost doesn't feel like Japan any
