We live in Niigata city, so the travel time and expense to get to this resort is a big factor in this review.
My son and I are learning to snowboard, and we found this place nice and inexpensive to do just that. We bought lift punch-cards for only 2800yen/10-pack. That's 280yen per lift. Very nice price.
For beginners, this is maybe not the best place to try to learn, because we found the slopes start off too steep, then flatten out too much. Nothing in between. However, the beautiful blue skies and mild temps made each trip out to Tainai a great time in the end.
We didn't try the back hill, as we heard it was even steeper then the main one.
The music they blast from the loudspeakers up the lifts is pretty low-level J-pop for the most part, with only the occasional good song apparently thrown in by accident.
Crowd-wise, we found the other skiers and boarders to be considerate and didn't have any close calls. I expected more of a crowd for weekend aftternoons.
Food in the chalet is not the best, but not as bad as Ats Bandai which was terrible. I liked the ramen.
I highly recommend this ski hill for anyone living in Niigata, although anyone living in Niigata has probably already heard of it.
