A popular resort for Kansai folk
Oku Ibuki seemed to be the most popular resort in Kansai on the 30th, there was really no need for the nav system in the car. Just follow all the cars with skis/boards on the roof, they all headed there.

Once there the car parks gave an indication on how popular this place was. Arriving at 8:00am there were already about 750 cars there. (Based on carpark capacity, I didn't count. Total carpark capactiy is 1800)

From the lower carparks there

Small but nice!
Biwako Valley is a small ski area with only 8 trails but it is actually pretty good in my opinion.

The entire ski area was open and there was a lot of snow in the trees. Yes the trails are short but if you read the mountain stats you shouldn't be surprised or disappointed. I went on a Friday so it wasn't very crowded. I'm sure the weekends would get very crowded though. There is only one annoying flat spot

Biwako Valley review by rp
This was my first time at Biwako Valley. I had very low expectations based on some of the other reviews but was pleasantly surprised. I did a bus tour from shin osaka that cost 6000 yen for the bus and the lift ticket, which I thought was a pretty good deal overall (depending on day, cost is 5000-9000 yen, and there are also pick ups from 5 spots in Kyoto and Osaka).

On the plus side, the views were

Biwako Valley review by Keen snowboarder
We have been to Biwako about twice a year for the past three years so thought it was time I put a recent review up.

We have loved Biwako every time. Even on the busy days, or when a lift might be closed down it has still been good to us.

This season has been the worst of the three. Every other time we have gone up the whole mountain has been open, the snow has been fantastic (we had ice

Biwako Valley review
This gets 2 stars as it is about 90min by car from Osaka and 60 from Kyoto.\r\n\r\nIt is pricey-5800 to get you an all day lift ticket plus gondola. Kids have to pay a fair bit too.\r\n\r\nOnly 4 runs were open when we were there due to lack of snow (50cm, 90% man made). Ironic, since 2 hours away in Gifu they have record amounts (over 300cm).\r\n\r\nRuns are short-2-3 minutes to get down most. But the lifts are fast (when

It gets 3 stars because with snow it looked like it might be fun.

Narrow runs, but a series of lifts takes you up over 1,000m in altitude. Some lifts require you to walk uphill to get to the next-didn't anyone take Resort Building 101 in school?

All the areas were lacking snow, but the 50cm advertised was actually 0-30cm in most places. Fun enough for little kids, but most areas would be closed if they had such

I shouldn't complain, cos from Osaka, it's 2 hours by car and you can satisfy the hankering for piste love.

Early morning I thought that a set of skates would have been more suited, but as the March sun gained strength, ice quickly became soft and slushy affording more control and softer bumps.

There are many beginners and kids, so making your way to the bottom can become a giant slalom where the flags move to keep you on yer edges(or off).

The place was nice enough but small short unchallenging runs - no room for adventure.

If you have children or are a beginner the place is ideal

I had a great time here it less than a hour away from Kyoto by Train (Kosei Line) and a regular bus from Shiga station to Biwako Valley (320 YEN). A day lift ticket is 4000YEN and uses a electronic swipe card. The Gondola Lift then takes you to the top (1800 YEN).

The locals were very cool and even offered to help me through the ticketing and equipment hire. Most of the signs are still in Japanese but a few

Kunizakai Kogen Snow Park review by Dogchop
I went here with a friend for a bit of variety and got more or less what I expected. This place is ideal for families and beginners.

What does this place have to offer an advanced boarder / skier? Very little beyond warming-up for going somewhere else.

What does this place offer an intermediate boarder (like me)? Right over on the far right hand side there is a box and a jump. If anyone wants to learn how to use these things

Oku Ibuki review by riz
Last Sunday 1/30/05 I went to oku ibuki. It was my second time ever to go snowboarding/or skiing in Japan. Coming from USA, my previous experience is in the Colorado Rockies. Oku Ibuki was completely crowded last Sunday. Even advanced snowboarders were crashing into people. It was unavoidable on some of the green runs. There some narror areas were many people would stop to rest or watch some of the jumps along the side and it would be difficult to

I have been here twice during weekend. Of course, there were a lot of people gathering.

Various runs and nice views were at high altitude.

Lift was old and a bit slow causing long lines.
