Great tree runs
First time at Hakuba 47 and we were greeted with white out conditions. Began to snow by early afternoon and the designated tree skiing area had some good terrain to ride.

Had a great day here after we worked out the best runs. Long groomers and good off piste terrain made it good for all levels of ability

Don't like it as much as I used to
This was my 4th trip to Hakuba 47 / Goryu overall, but it's been years since my last trip... and I will probably be spending less time here from now on.

From the perspective of someone coming from Tokyo, the time / cost balance just isn't there when you compare it to resorts in Yuzawa or even Hokkaido.

Starting with transport, Hakuba isn't exactly great for a day trip from Tokyo, so you have to spend the night (unless you're super

Let's 47!
I'd read some good things about Hakuba 47 (and neighbouring Hakuba Goryu) but when I planned a mid-March trip, I wasn't expecting the snow to be so good.

It had dumped on the Sunday and Monday so, as I was staying on the Goryu side, I had ridden Goryu all day on Tuesday and didn't make it over to 47 until the Wednesday. Although there was no new snow, Wednesday had the best of the weather, with blue skies and

Great mountain combined with Goryu, achieves a lot with little.

First day was nearly a white-out at top, second day had slightly better vis, but still snowing heavily. Great runs for speed, big park and pipe well set up under gondola.

Didn't see much off-piste to visit on this side of mountain but spaced trees near top leading down toward Goryu looked very nice.

On second day, late in afternoon, was bombing through open section of trees above gondola station and in moment

Had a few teething problems (even though between the three of us we have over 15 years of experience living in Japan) mainly with what type of pass to get. No help at all from the ticket staff. They wanted to charge us 4000 yen each for an hour on the slopes! The Happy 7 pass gives you access to 7 resorts but you're stuck at 1 resort for a whole day.

Anyway...real nice vibe to the place

A 5 star resort for the snowboarder.

I spent a full day there with a riding mate. We arrived early in the morning on a bright sunny day. Unfortunately not any serious snowfall the last 3-4 days so there was not any powder left on the main courses and the of-bounds staff was heavily tracked.

Nevertheless the main slopes were almost perfectly groomed and we were able to do some hard carving on some 30 deg slopes. The average slope angle of

Lot's of good, short runs through mostly fairly well spaced trees between the on piste stuff.

Don't be too conspicuous or the ski patrol will try and catch you.

Linked to Goryu Toomi.

There's a big funneling avalanche area where the avalanche barriers are at Goryu. Don't go down that way

Sunday in the middle of a 3 day weekend is probably not the ideal time to be heading up the mountain and expecting to have it all to yourself and today was no exception.

There were lots of people on the mountain, queues for Africa on the hits in the park and ankle biters popping up in front of you more often than was comfortable. The pipe however, had a very short queue probably owing to the fact it was

Hakuba 47 with great conditions - outstanding.

No annoying music except by the half-pipe. Lots of cool little restaurants.

Great snow! Great runs! Could've stayed forever

A lot of places were short of snow at the end December, but the top half of the mt. was open when I arrived on the 29th of December.

In short, ski patrol, lift operators, and shuttle bus drivers were extremely polite and helpful (in Japanese--I didn't use English with them, so I don't know if they can speak it). A friend joined me on the 31st, on an overnight bus from Osaka. He arrived at 6 a.m., when I found

Both times I was there, there was a lot of snow on the upper elevations.. a white out storm made conditions a little too deep, but thats good too.. a few rails n boxes, all "ride on" I think.. and HUGE jumps at the bottom..

I mean American resort sized kickers! (not typical Japanese size).. best I have seen at any resort in Japan.

But I have only been to 8 resorts here, but hey, still says a
