Great potential, just need the right conditions...
I like Akakura Kanko, but I'd like it a lot more if I could hit it with the right conditions... Being a weekend warrior, that seems to have eluded me so far... But still, it's a great resort!

Akakura Kanko is a large resort with plenty of slopes, and lots of fun terrain out in the designated 'off-piste' section. The cool thing about Kanko is that even if the conditions aren't the best (like when I went), there's plenty of

Puking all day!
Akakura Kanko, Myoko, Niigata. Saturday, January 31st.

I was lucky enough to win a ticket from SnowJapan to use at any of the Myoko resorts. Thanks SJ! I received the ticket in the mail and decided to use it that coming Saturday to ride at Akakan with my buddy 'Bushiman', and another friend who was visiting from Tokyo.

I would generally take the highway to Myoko from Nagano city, but on this particular day we decided to use the back roads toward

Quite a surprise!
I'd never been to Akakura Kanko before, but thanks to a SJ giveaway I decided to give it a whirl with my fellow SJ Forums lurker, Neck.

Kanko was always somewhere I'd wanted to go after reading the entry for it in The World Snowboarding Guide. Their description made it sound epic, with pillow lines and steep trees... Yet, in all my +10yrs of riding in and around Nagano Prefecture, I'd never heard whisper of the place...

We rocked up a day

Nice views and desent spring coverage.
This review is for the last day of the season at Akakura and doesn't reflect on how it may be mid season.

I had a good day. It was May 6th and I was able to snowboard after staying the night at a wonderful hot spring hotel in neighboring Seki Onsen. The views of Mt. Myoko from both the bottom of the gondola and during the begging of the ride up were beautiful and made the trip worth it by

Akakan in springtime
Akakura Kanko, Myoko. – April 5th, 2013.

Thanks Snow Japan for sending me these 2 tickets for anywhere in Myoko in your last giveaway of the 2013 season! Also, congratulations on the new site. Layout is great and easy to navigate.

So here is my review for Akakura Kanko in Myoko. I waited to use the tickets until April, so I could take my brother who was visiting from England. It was his first time visiting Japan and his first time snowboarding

Akakura Kanko/Onsen
Overall this wasn't a bad resort. I really enjoy most of the runs offered. My only issue is that I bought a lift ticket for to ski the Kanko as well as the Onsen. Getting back to from the Onsen side to the Kanko side was a nightmare. The map provided at the top of the mountain was helpful to a certain point. The lack of signs directing us back to the Kanko side was a headache. Overall this isn't

Disappointing
We really lucked out this day.

It was the first day of spring lift operations which usually wouldn't be enough to even interest me in considering Akakan.

However, with 5-10cms the day before and about 15-20 cms over on the slopes there was a good top-up. Surprisingly, it wasn't the heavy powder that you usually associate with spring skiing in Japan. The temperatures remained low throughout the day and it continued snowing which meant that the snow stayed nice and

Akakan was a bit of a disappointment.

To be fair though there had not been much snow in the previous days to our arrival.

It did look like it could be a bit of fun on a good day. When we went, the sun had melted one side of the gully we went bombing into and as a result came to a screeching halt when we got to the other side.

There were some nice looking gullies and tree

I love Akakan!

First went there last winter and loved it! My third time- every day with 30cm+ fresh! Stayed on the top lift most of the day.\r\n\r\nThere are tracks through the trees next to the top quad, and under it. Ski Patrol wasn't happy. But if the snow is too deep it's easy to get stuck if you're not careful.

Theres a backcountry gate/warning skiers left from the top of the quad. Fun couple hundred meters vert, links into a

Akakura Kanko Resort review by Canadian Freeskier
Akakan is a nice little resort with its red-hooded lodge located in the middle of the slopes as a unique cachet. It is a little bit small to spend few days there, but there are others resorts in the vicinity.

The snow conditions were excellent for this time of the year. On the groomed tracks, the snow coverage was perfect with granular powder. I did not encounter a single spot of ice.

HOWEVER, the particularity of this resort is

Akakan review by Brett Dennis
Myoko is a place I'd dreamed of visiting for some time & on researching the bigger ski areas, Akakura Kanko seemed to stand out. Afterwards, while I enjoyed the overall Myoko area, I have mixed views of Akakan itself.

Arrived to dumping snow & solid snowbase in the village, had a couple of clear warm days, another good overnight dump then bluebird again. Myoko obviously gets the amount of snow many other areas dream off & I think probably under reports

We were very spoilt having 5 days in Myoko, with constant fresh snow falls day and night.

Akakura Onsen - great child or beginner terrain with nice cafe at Yodel up the top. Would be a bit small to spend more than a day or 3 here.

Akakura Kanko - which is conjoined with Akakura Onsen is much larger with excellent terrain and lifts. This is handy as most available accommodation (esp for English speakers) and village is at Onsen which
