Coming from Iwate prefecture, this resort is almost as close as the bigger resorts like Appi and Geto to Morioka. Like these other locations it cops plenty of snow but not the crowds, perhaps due to the absence of regular public transport.

I went by car, but there is a shinkansen station that would only be a ¥2-3000 taxi from the resort so it's not unreachable. Also there are a number of accomodations nearby ranging from dormitory to pension to

Jeunesse Kurikoma review by akitapow
It is hard to compare this ski hill to the other heavy hitters in Japan, but in terms of smaller local ski-jos, this one is pretty SWEET (def one of the best in Akita)

When the snow is good, this place is so much fun! There are definitely runs for all levels, but the highlight is the upper lift (left side of the mtn) where you can find the 40deg slope and courses that can really give you a workout.

Just another small ski hill in Akita.\r\n\r\nCheap, but with 2 lifts and no steeps, I'd say it is aimed towards the mellow skier/rider that just wants to get out and make some turns. They do set up a little mini park with some kickers and a box or 2, but nothing special there either

Taiheizan Opus review by akitapow
Opus is definitely geared towards families with kids etc etc.

You can definitely go there to make some turns, but the runs are pretty limited and not too steep.

Simply put, I'd go there if nothing else was open, haha, but definitely NOT where I would go after its been dumping fresh POW

Akita Hachimantai review by akitapow
This is another one of Akita's many tiny tiny ski hills, but Hachimantai gets some pretty solid snow!

They are always the first ski hill to open in Akita and you can def find some great freshies. Last time I was there was in March, and we were still finding some pretty nice powder lines. Another great thing about this place is that there aren't really any boundaries, so you can hit some tree lines and get off the

Tazawako review
Living in Akita, this resort is a great option because it's one of the bigger mountains up here. It's not too bad either. On a good day you can find funs powder lines on fairly steep runs! Obviously like many other ski hills in Akita, nothing is super steep, which is a bummer, but still fun nonetheless!

Tazawako has something for everyone! so it can accomodate for a family trip or just someone who wants to make some

Chokai Kogen Yashima review
This ski jo is nearby, so for what it is, I love it. Night ski is solid, pretty much the whole ski jo is lit up. After a fresh dumping, you can find some pretty nice powder stretches, but they are all pretty short.

Either way, its a great ski jo to hit after work during the week, and is also great for new riders learning, or seasoned riders who want to dial in their skills.

Ani review
As a beginner snowboarder, I found the intermediate runs at the top of the mountain to be a ton of fun, good for a 4-hour pass. Don't start later than 10 in the morning, as by 2pm it gets a little wet and slushy.

It was also pretty affordable, and they have rental boot sizes for us large foreigners - up to 29.5cm.

The one huge con to this place is the looooong flat beginner run that goes to the bottom of

Ani review
Ani is the ski-jo that I go to most often. It's not the closest to where I live, but definately the most economical.

Economical because for me it's under a 2 hour drive, it's pretty cheep (4 hour lift pass only 2500 yen, and I've heard the rental costs aren't too bad), it's never crowded and the snow conditions are usually great.

The mountain has a reputation for always snowing (and snow monsters). I have boarded at Ani and it's

This is a good resort in Japan. The resort is almost as well known for it's view as the skiing and snowboarding, but that is good too. One of the top places in northern Japan for an all round experience. Enjoy the winter sports in Japan!
