Disappointed
I spent a 3 days of good early-season skiing at Iwappara in Niigata last week on a reported 30-35cm cover, so I was expecting even better on the reported 55cm at Kurumayama.

I was very disappointed to find that the only snow anywhere seemed to be man-made, with plenty of rocks and grass sticking out of the main slopes.

Gave up the board after the first run, but by the second run of the afternoon the top of the mountain

Overall I think that the 3000 Yen that I paid for this resort was worth it only because of the snowpark. The snow conditions were horrible throughout the day. Grass, shrubs, and bamboo were sticking out through the snow on most of the resort. The only powder was located on the moguls and off trail. I spent most of the day off trail, carving my own path just so I could avoid the frozen main routes. The snow park was

Whipped up to Kurumayama last Friday, was expecting shite after all the rain but was pleasently surprised. At first hard and fast, then sunny and getting a bit softer, good view of Fuji, then started snowing so nice pow on a solid base.

I was not expecting much after reading my fellow Kiwi's review below, but it was really pretty good.

Got a park close to the base, some guy offered us discount coupons for the lift pass - Y3000!

Never waited

I feel the need to review this place again now that its changed a bit. The park they have built has some good rails (about 5) some well shaped table tops, a really nice spine and a wall ride at the bottom. There werent too many people and there werent any queues for the park which made a nice change from other resorts.

Unfortunately the snow conditions were dangerously icy up at the top section of the mountain and unlike the

For a 4500 yen bus deal, I probably shouldn't complain but what the hell... Only three lifts on the bottom half of the mountain were operating. (They haven't finished making the courses higher up yet they said - go figure.)

The longest run was less than 2minutes. Even the ramen was boring.

There might be some challenging terain accessible from the top with another metre of snow, but I won't be going back to find out

My first Japanese skiing experience was lousy. Same kind of stress as driving in Tokyo.

Long unchanneled, "every man for himself", lift lines. Slow lifts and short runs equal bunk conditions. Snow was crap...take the extra drive to Niigata...it's got to be worth it.

Advertised as more "intermediate to advance runs", I thought there would be some off-piste and some true black diamonds. I was wrong. Everyone was skiing GS/S style, skidding fat skis with lazy technique, bump run was iced

Should only come here if you live in the Lake Suwa area and a beginner.

If you're a decent boarder though they have a kick ass half pipe - nicely groomed and marked - but the chairlifts are slow so it'd be better to walk back to the top

Crappy snow, all hard machine made crap on the bottom half, and icy/exposed patches at the top.

One run from the top still hasn't opened due to lack of snow.

Can't see why people would come here to be honest

My first day boarding in Japan and the weather was perfect. I think it snowed 2 nights before and there was still loads of untracked pow pow. We did about 2 runs on piste and the rest was under the ropes which the lifties were cool about. Good steep stuff up top BUT....

Its a bit boring for more than half a day. There were no jumps, no halfpipe and no rails. The snow conditions made up for it but a

This place is great for beginners. The main green slope is a nice long straight slope. Even though it is not so wide it's still great place to practice if you are a beginner. There isn't too many slope choices though, 1 green, 1 red, and 1 black. It doesn't seem to be an extremly popular place and there weren't that many people, even though I went on a Saturday.

When I was there it snowed a little bit which

Spent Xmas there with my family.

The snow was not too bad, though a slushy at the base. Parking was hassle, but free.

Great place for families plenty of things going on. Boarder/Skier mix about 50/50.
