A good day at Ishiuchi Maruyama
Spent 4 hours at Ishiuchi Maruyama today after a day at Joetsu Kokusai yesterday.

The snow wasn't as good as yesterday but it was still in fairly decent conditions.

Got there quite early as the better weather was forecast for the morning. Cloud over in Tokamachi and as I got over into Minamiuonuma, but blue skies and sun above Ishiuchi and Yuzawa town. Fine morning.

It wasn't busy, especially earlier on - no waiting for lifts at all, and lots of them

Another day in Minamiuonuma
Ishiuchi Maruyama is a decent sized place just outside the border of Yuzawa town, about 5 minutes drive from Yuzawa IC and probably the same from Shiozawa Ishiuchi IC.

Was there for 5 hours today, snow was pretty good. Wasn't busy at all, but not empty either. As someone else mentioned in a recent review, there's a number of different 'bases'. It's one of those places where it's best to have an idea of the layout before you

Big, classic-style resort
While the kid was attending snowboard camp at Ishiuchi Maruyama, I took the opportunity to get in 4 days skiing at some places in the area I'd always wanted to visit, braving the drive up the Kan-Etsu -- which actually went surprisingly smoothly. After getting the kid checked in at the camp, I decided to spend the first day on snow at Ishiuchi Maruyama itself.

It had been snowing, and continued snowing lightly for much of that day, so skiing conditions

Charming - love the chill/homely atmosphere
My first review, and I'd like to dedicate it to charming little ishiuchi maruyama - so far the only skijo my timid beginner better-half has requested by name to return to - and for the third year in a row we have returned.

Now let me just start off with a big disclaimer - the skiing here is actually not that great. The slopes are average, the elevation low, the terrain uninspiring, the lifts are slow and laid out poorly, transport

Good, Not so bad, and Doh!
It was my first time to Ishiuchi Maruyama. The overall experience was great, given the fresh 50 cm of snow. The day ended badly, not because of the ski slopes, will tell the tale later. So, here goes my day.

We arrived from Shinjuku in an overnight bus at about 7am at the Birdland lodge. It's a small lodge with an onsen, tiny changing rooms, a rental shop, and souvenir shop. They were closed when we arrived but

Let's Ishiuchi!
A Friday night, Tokyo ski bus special is not the most comfortable way to travel but with decent snowfall forecast, I was happy to part with my 8,600Yen and head off in the darkness to Niigata. About 8 hours and a few service area stops later, we arrived at the resort to find a good foot of fresh snow everywhere.

The bus dropped us off at the Hatsukaishi Entrance, namely the skier's right side of the resort. The 500yen lockers and

I give Ishiuchi 3 stars as an average from:

Park *****
Piste ***
Off-piste *

As such, this review has been split into 3 sections;

Part 1 - The park.

A fantastic park. Located on the Northern part of the resort consisting of 2 areas accessed from 2 adjoining lifts (K2 and K4). These areas are well thought out with plenty of rails (ranginging short - long), boxes and tabletop kickers for all levels. From the beginner taking their first foray into the park

I have only been here for night skiing but I was impressed.

This has to be the biggest night skiing I've seen.

There is a lot of lifts, a lot to choose from, and some varied terrain. I was able to find my own powder pocket and tear through it over and over.

Made me pay for parking though at night. I recommend it for night skiing unless you want to stay in a small

For a quick getaway from Tokyo on a day trip, it's a good bet. A bit crowded on some runs as many of the people there stay "on the course". Not much tree space to play in, most everything is blocked off. It was a beautiful day though, some spring skiing in January!

There's also access to GALA Ski resort via a dual access ski lift. GALA isn't as nice as this place though (In my

I like ishiuchi. The top 'street' gets crowded but there are plenty of places to peel of and head onto trails. Loads of lifts. Quite busy but no waiting. I went there for the day and really enjoyed it. A colorful place.

There is a nice beginner platter at the bottom

This review is basically for night skiing, since I've only been during the day once or twice, which had its moments in its own right... from what I hear, this is THE place for skiing/boarding under the lights for the region, certainly anywhere in Niigata.

They've got the most terrain open for night skiing of any resort in the area. Parking is free from 4 pm, the slopes open for dark at 5pm, and the lift ticket is only 2,500 yen.

Typical budget Yuzawa resort with well groomed, wide runs. Surprisingly, the number of boarders vs. skiers seemed evenly matched here.

The large number of short lifts for this mountain is most bizzare given the number of courses it has though.

From bottom to top, one must take no less than 5 lifts for a total travel time 30 minutes or longer depending on crowds! Poor lift layout too as you can find yourself having to traverse uphill between lifts.

Perfect
