Early Season riding at Tashiro
Took the second Gondola (Tashiro) Limited lifts and slopes open this early in the season but the snow was soft on the fringes. There is a long flat spot from the top of the gondola to the good slopes so build up speed or you'll me walking.

NOBODY there so snow of the fringes and back country stayed virgin all day. Snow was not quite deep enough to get to all the off-piste areas I like to go but fringes

Wonderful snow, but terrible shuttle bus to from the shinkansen
I've already been to Kagura several times last season. It is a very nice place, in particular for the quality and volume of snow. Some nice runs between the trees and on the back side behind the highest lift.

Enjoy skiing

First turns at Kagura (8th December 2014)
I have been to Kagura before but this was the first time I have been early season.

Was planning to go since last week and a bit worried about the snow conditions, but very pleased to hear about the heavy snow in the region over the weekend.

And even more pleased to arrive in a very snowy looking Yuzawa - complete with clear blue skies. Looked like there had been a fair dumpage of snow but the snow clouds had moved

Great snow, nice variety and some great off-piste and BC!
Of the skijos in Japan I have been to Kagura is definitely one of my favorites. I heard it described once on this website as “a bunch of lifts going up a mountain” and this description seems fitting to me. Due to its location, it gets consistent good powder snow all winter long and due to how open things are, you can even find fresh powder runs later in the day. Kagura also offers a great variety of courses for

A great day out
I got to visit Kagura for the first time thanks to Yuzawa town and SnowJapan. Thank you both.

Kagura the resort is made up of three areas, Tashiro, Kagura and Mitsumata. As I was with a non skier I was able to start in Tashiro, and make my way across, though Kagura and onto Mitsumata.

Tashiro area is access from Tashiro station by a ropeway. There's a ticket office, a small shop, nice waiting area, toilets and the ropeway station. The

Spring powder...
As we approached Yuzawa-machi, not far from Naeba, the snow started coming down pretty heavily. We went from solid spring conditions to winter in only a few short hours. As it was our first time in this area I was quite impressed by the massive infrastructure at both Naeba and Kagura. It was obvious that these places were huge and rangy, even from the road.

Driving into Yuzawa-achi is easy and straight-forward and everything is clearly marked and relatively logically laid

Awesome Friday after the New Year at Tashiro
Awesome weather conditions (clear sushine) highlighting the fresh snow the night before.

Spent the day at just the Tashiro section of Kagura (never made it over to Mitsumata area).

Resort was EMPTY till about noon when the crowd showed up (it's new years holiday so no surprise).

Nice groomers (if that's your thing) but one really long flat spot to get to the main runs.

Some opportunities for back country runs in the trees but not extensive.

Was

Kagura review
I wanted to check out a Niigata resort on my way back from Hokkaido and managed to squeeze in a day and a half at Kagura, about which I'd heard a lot of good things. Here are my thoughts:-

1.
There's a lot of terrain. Although Tashiro was closed (I'm not sure if this was due to late-season or post-earthquake electricity-saving), it's a big resort and of course you've got Naeba next door too.

2.
The top areas (accessed from

Kagura review by Ski Dude
I went to the Tashiro on the Emperors B'Day Public Holiday for my first visit, mainly as there was no snow anywhere else in Niigata. I give it 4 stars purely for the snow and runs only. The facilities at this resort are pathetic.

The snow was absolutely awesome, including a snow storm with fresh powder, but the winds were howling all day long.

It took over an hour and a half to get on the gondola from the bottom with about

I usually go to Kagura early in the season and late in the season.

Early because it's not crowded like it is usually and also because it's one of the first resort to receive big amount of snow. This year 2010, was unbelievable, there was so much powder in December, you couldn`t actually ride it unless you were on one of the steepest side of the mountain. Sometimes, not all areas are open (Tashiro usually opens later).

Late because it's also

This was our first time to vist Kagura and we were up for a day trip from Tokyo which is easily possible if you take the early shinkansen. Be warned that if you go at the weekend you could find the shared changing facilities at Mitsumata base are cramped and queues build quickly for the lift passes and ski rental once the bus from Echigo Yuzawa arrives. I saw some rental shops just across the road from the car park
