The sum of all my reviews
Kusatsu is an Onsen town that has a ski field nearby. Last season on my first visit to Kusatsu I asked a number of people why they were there. Why did I ask this, well on my first visit to Kusatsu last season the snow conditions weren't very good, the base level was low, and the snow was so icy I really needed ice skates instead of skis, and yet just up the road in Yuzawa, which as the crow

No more KFC
No more KFC, yes you read that right. The KFC at Kusatsu has gone, replaced by an outpost of the main restaurant. KFC biscuits were always a favorite for lunch on days at Kusatsu, now I'll have to stick to the excellent pizzas at the main restaurant.

Other than KFC missing, everything is pretty much the same at Kusatsu as my last review. The lift that used to run above the top gondola is still closed, but lift 5 was up

Long and narrow
I have been to Kusatsu Kokusai twice now.

Basically Kusatsu is one very long skijo. For bottom part is a number of runs, lots of stuff for beginners.

The upper part there's a Gondola taking you on a dramatic ride up to the... yes, the top bit! This top bit was the best part of Kusatsu and where we spent most of our time. The snow was great up there. A few ways back down, though it's more

Two Resorts in One
Kusatsu is based around one long run, halfway down is the lower Gondola base and upper car park. This splits the resort into two, more experienced skiers/boarders may want to stick to the top half, although the run down from top to bottom is a lot of fun.
To get up the mountain it is necessary to either drive to the lower Gondola base then take the gondola, or take two lifts (nice little downhill in between) then the gondola.

Kusatsu Kokusai review
I happened to be in Kusatsu (onsen town) for Christmas, so thought I'd check out it's ski resort. As it was early season, much of the resort wasn't open, including the long, narrow runs mentioned in the other reviews. I was therefore limited to using 2 of the 3 runs/lifts accessed from the gondola which, in the absence of an early morning bus (I think the first one leaves the town's bus terminal at 9.40!), I had to get to

Smallish resort built around two very long runs. Fun, twisting courses over varied terrain. Not xxx extreme by any standards - no black runs - but plenty to enjoy for all but the most hardcore. Short lift lines. Heli skiing available at reasonable prices, tho I didn't try this time.

Learner skiers are a prob in places due to narrow course - collision danger is high at times!

Surprisingly convenient for Tokyo - get the JR Bus from Shinjuku on

A badly planned resort, like most in Japan, and the crucial ration of "ski-time" to "lift time" is fairly bad here.

Very crowded and while it says it's a "family field" there are so many beginner boarders there that I was terrified to let my child learn to ski there.

As other reviews have written - trails everywhere and just a teen-skiers field really.

Try Manza for a better experience (close by)

What makes skiing here nice is picturesque Kusatsu onsen town.

If you are looking for that authentic winter onsen experience, this is THE place.

Even on a holiday weekend, lift lines were short, but the base of the mountain was a zoo by afternoon.

Lot's of novice boarders clogging up the high mountain trails. Still a nice weekend trip

Kusatsu Kokusai review by Adrian
If you want powder runs then go to Hokkaido, if you want to rip around with your mates playing cat-track tag and ripping up little jibs and hits then Kusatsu is a good option.

The main run is an 8.5km leg-burner that would make for a great ironman boardercross.

However, the trails are quite narrow and quickly get like weaving through Tokyo traffic.

If you're in the area and there hasn't been a dump for a few days and everywhere

Nice mountain for skiers. Long runs, challenging terrain (for most people) and also selection for beginners near the bottom.

The village is an onsen village, so good onsen at the same time.
