So much fun!
Madarao seems to just be getting better and better. What with all the tree runs they've cut through the forests, mellow glade runs, plus all the features they've built -log rides, jumps etc. out in the trees, you can't but not have a fun time at Madarao. There are also a whole bunch of pistes that are left ungroomed, which make for the perfect warm-up before hitting the trees.

The lifts are decent and speedy, all except the one that actually

Powder and trees
This was our 5th Japan trip. The resorts we have been to previously discourage tree skiing. Whilst there was also the potential for rope ducking, the treed terrain in most of the other Japanese resorts we felt were not worth offending the local management ... what is the point to duck ropes when the terrain in the trees was so gentle that one had to aim straight to risk getting stuck, or has poor fall-lines resulting in significant

Sick powder day!! Tickets compliments of snowjapan giveaway
I go to Madarao every year and never a disappointment! This year was no different.

The first day there was about 30cm of freshies and it was super cold making the conditions amazing!! tons of tree runs at this place and ski patrol is nowhere in sight.

On the second day I awoke to about 2ft of snow burying my car which took quite a while to dig out. It was worth it! Epic pow conditions.

We went directly to

Madarao...Made of Pow...Mad About Pow...Madapow!
35 cm of fresh snow! It's almost unfair to review a mountain under those conditions...

I first skied Madarao five years ago. It was my first introduction to Japanese skiing, and despite what I felt were some shortcomings (old, double and triple chairs; no off trail allowed) I liked it even so. Since then there have been some great improvements - another detachable quad, and the tree runs! (More on them later)

Madarao has a fairly wide variety

Powder Overload!
It was a 3 day weekend, so decided to make the most of the extra day and mega-dump of snow by heading to Madarao with my ride buddy. We were not dissapointed and I would guess that there was a good 50cm of fresh, light powder for us to enjoy!

Madarao is a medium sized resort just on the Nagano side of the border with Niigata near Lake Nojiri. It is joined to Tangram and a a ticket is available for

Fantastic snow and a good compact place
Madarao is a fine place.

Easy to get too as well from Nagano and nicely placed kind of between Myoko and Nozawa, not far from Shiga Kogen either. All in all it's a great region to be in and you could spend a long time exploring.

So back to Madarao. The snow was awesome when we were there but it was quite busy. I suppose the same two things were likely seen at all nearby resorts as well.

But I

A great resort with plenty to keep any level skier or border happy for a whole day easily!
I went to Madarao and Tangram, thanks to SJ, well the Madarao side of it.
By paying 1500 yen I was able to get a full mountain pass, with handing in the voucher, which then gave me quite a lot of terrain to ski on.
As these two resorts are joined I will review them together here.

When I got up it was sunny and blue sky all around, and when I arrived in Madarao about 1.5 hours later it was also sunny

Really nice tree runs intended, by Madarao, to be ridden!
For me the defining feature of Madarao would have to be its tree runs.

Though many skijos have nice off-piste opportunities, Madarao offers tree runs intended by the skijo to be ridden! From the short but sweat "Usagi" course to the much longer "Powder Wave 1 and 2" and "Powder Theater" there are seven tree courses for riders to explore. The trees in these areas are for the most part very well spaced and some of the easier spots make

In the bowl
My first review here and my first time at Madarao.

I was hesitant to go here after looking at the map, but we managed to get a nice deal on a hotel plus 2 days of snowboarding. From looking at the map, everything seems to converge into that bowl at the bottom. That's exactly true. Everyone gathers there and it's flat. Crossing that flat from one side to the other is a pain, especially when it's crowded with lots of people

Spring at Madarao Kogen
This is a review based on the spring season operations.

It was a beautiful spring day when we arrived at Madarao Kogen. Deep blue cloudless skies and the accompanying views of the nearby resorts is a nice bonus to snowboarding at Madarao.

Although the reports indicated there had been 5cms of snow over night by the time we got onto the slopes all traces had either been scrapped away or burned up by the sun.

The top runs were hard and

This resort isn't too bad, but for the distance, there are better ones. The lifts could use a new coat of paint, lots of rust on them. The place was pretty busy, some of the runs were not that wide.

It wasn't all bad though, we still had a good time there. The snow was soft up top, the bottom was pretty nice as well, even for being packed so much by everyone there. There is alot of off-trail riding

Madarao Kogen review
There are a lot of lifts but most are doubles and some were closed. 17 lifts but only 2 quads. Stayed on the main quad most of the day. Nice powder far skiers right, not many people went there cause it was out of the way. Had to skate and hike a bit back to lift.

Runs on skiers left of the mountain were ok. Have to catch a few lifts though. At the bottom have to skate and catch a
