The right hand 'Maiko' side of Maiko Snow Resort
This is a review of only part of Maiko, as I haven't got over to the Gondola area yet.

The 'Maiko Area', I believe it used to be called Korakuen, is on the right hand side of the resort, and just right by the Shiozawa Ishiuchi exit of the Kanetsu Expressway.

We decided to go there as my wife and child wanted beginner slopes, and I was looking forward to checking out the triple lift and Dolphin Course coming off that.

And what

Get thee to the back bowl -- and get there early
Day 2 of the Niigata road trip. And what a beautiful day it was! Clear blue skies, fresh snow from the day before.

I knew I wanted to head to the back bowl, and was advised to head to the gondola base, not the Maiko hotel base. Good thing, too, because all the signs seemed to want to point me to the Maiko hotel base area, and had I not known there were two different base areas, I'd probably have ended

Lots of snow
Maiko Snow Resort seems to be one of the more popular places in the Yuzawa region - though it's not geographically in Yuzawa of course... but pretty much as good as.

I like it.

There's a few parts and as many other people say the Gondola side is more interesting. If you are a beginner then the right side by the hotel is probably best, but for everyone else head for the Gondola side.

There's kind of two parts to

Let's Maiko!
I visited Maiko after a night of decent snowfall, and knowing that it would be less affected by the strong winds forecast for the area. Staying in Yuzawa (at Yuzawa Kenkouland, the overnight onsen place just below Gala Yuzawa station), I awoke to find it still snowing outside and with plenty of fresh snow on parked cars. Running a little late, I took a taxi to the station (1,030Yen) and then the first (07:40) shuttle bus (which is free) from

A good place
I like Maiko.

Two base areas - the Gondola area and the Maiko area which is literally 500m from the Shiozawa Ishiuchi IC exit of the Kanetsu Expressway. Super convenient.

The Gondola area is where I go. Either take the Gondola or two quad lifts (the quad lifts are the better idea on a busy day) up to the Okusoeji area. The bowl. And that's where I spend most of my time when I go to Maiko.

There's a

Nothing like a free lunch!!
This was the 2nd time I've visited Maiko, thanks to the wonderful people at Maiko Korakuen resort and Snowjapan, I snaffled a free ticket for here. Last time I went, the snow condition was unbelievable.....very light powder and lots of it......so much in fact that I felt it was TOO much for this rather gentle resort. This time was the opposite, snow was uber hard packed, icy and super scraped on the steeper sections. The resort itself is kind of

Uber Deep Pow
I had been meaning to hit up Maiko for ages....I usually go to the higher Yuzawa resorts like Kagura. The snowfall has been crazy of late and right enough there is tons of pow everywhere!! This IS lower though so its not as light as at Kagura etc but good quality all the same. Easy access from Echigo Yuzawa, free shuttle bus that coincides with the Shinkansen arrival from Tokyo.

The upper left of the mountain is an ungroomed bowl

I timed it well and went on a very fine day with the sun out and fresh snow on the slopes.

I have been a few times before but not recently and this time I enjoyed it more than I have before... it's a really decent place to check out. Especially if you are upper-beginner / intermediate level.

The resort is basically split into 3 parts - the right hand side as you look at the mountain is the

Decent size when compared to its peers in this valley of many resorts. Only good for day or weekend trips though otherwise boredom would set in.

Good variety of slopes and nice training runs for beginners.

Good sized onsen.

Rental equipment in main building new and in good condition

I'm re-reviewing Maiko and I like it less than last time so I'm down-grading it to two stars. I remember it being crowded and dull when the gondola was closed. This time the gondola was open and it was...crowded and dull. Far too many super-slow boarders congesting the narrow and short runs in the bowl and valley. Korakuen is more open, faster and interesting.

I would recommend for complete beginners, families with small kids and for others mid-week only. Avoid on

Maiko Snow Resort review by rossno
Maiko is a great place to learn snowboarding.

Easy dismounts from lifts, short runs, and a 500m flat ending to all runs!

The average snowboarder beyond their first year would grow bored in an hour. The conditions were terrible because it had rained from several days before my visit and that produced solid rock ice on all slopes covered by a thin frost created by the snow flurrys of the day.

The facilities at Maiko offer three relaxation rooms for sleeping. I

First time out to Maiko. The area near the hotel has two lifts leading to some nice runs. The best runs are on the gondola side where you can find a beginner course that runs about 6km. At the top near the gondola are some fun runs but are all linked together by some flat areas.

Maiko was a nice resort and Id consider going again, fun to be had by all levels. ---

HOWEVER, the music
