Good place
Minakami is good. This was only the second place I've been to in Japan, so I can't really compare it to much, but despite looking pretty small, there are quite a few long runs here.

As other said, there are lots of runs for different skill levels, however I had one problem. I'm not a great skier, but I got bored on the beginner hills, and then found the "intermediate" runs much too hard. There was a HUGE gap in necessary

Houdaigi Dai Suki!
For a relatively small resort Houdaigi has lots to offer in terms of terrain, length of runs and snow quality. The majority of the mountain is geared towards beginners and intermediates with some nice long runs by Japan standards. That said, there are some steeps up top with very fun tree and off-piste sections.

The views from the top of Lift 9 are amazing on a bluebird day which I had the pleasure of experiencing.

A nice hill off the beaten path.
Overview

Houdaigi is a ski hill in the north of Minakami just under 20 km from Minakami IC (highway exit). It offers some nice courses for riders of all levels and due to it’s location it consistently gets good powder snow during the winter months. It is located on the northwestern slopes of Gunma’s Mt. Hotaka and due to this orientation the snow is less effected by sun than other hills in the area. I would consider Houdaigi

A fine skijo
Houdaigi is a fairly small but compact place that always seems to deliver with snow conditions when I have been. Don't know whether it's luck or that it just often has good snow - heard the latter from friends.

I really like the layout of the place as well though with fave runs being the top-back Number 9 course and Nandaira, serviced by a nice fast quad.

Paradise is good fun too.

If you are wanting to stay, recommend Chalet

Wow! Hidden gem indeed.
I was not prepared for the super powder conditions at Houdaigi. Maybe I haven't had a good run of luck, but the last time I encountered knee deep powder was in Hokkaido-- I've never come across anything even close on Honshu, despite countless visits to Kagura, Hakuba, Shiga Kogen, etc.

Great course layout and design for all levels, covered lifts, relatively uncrowded -- all making for a perfect combo. Make sure to buy your ticket at one of the convenience stores

A somewhat hidden gem (?)
Houdaigi is one of the ski resorts in Minakami, Gunma.

It's a not too long drive from the main Minakami area but when I have been there in the past (last time a few seasons ago), you are rewarded with some very good snow conditions.

It's not a huge place but there's some good runs and a quite compact layout with all the runs coming back down to the base area.

I don't know if this has changed but when I went it

Minakami Houdaigi review
Houdaigi is great for families and intermediates and advanced runs, however an expert skier may get bored if he is in action mood.

The mountain itself is nice, relatively nice lifts, quite cheap. But the powder is quite hard to find and it is normally closed so you will get shouted at by ski patrol (as we did like 3 times). But if you find it it is brilliant but tree skiing is difficult, Very dense. But there are two fun

Pretty much echo what Harry said plus as an outsider I found it very friendly.

Thought I would get bored (as opposed to board) quickly but didn't

I am a local in Minakami and use Houdaigi a lot with my family. There can also be some nice powder days here.

Snow

The snow conditions at Houdaigi are great. It has a a decent elevation, which means even if it has not snowed for a few days (which is rare in mid-Winter) the snow is preserved well.

It has its fare share of powder days, and there are a lot of great runs that the skifield will leave ungroomed

There was an enormous amount of snow laid out at the beginning of this season. It felt like you were riding backcountry....sort of. Okay, not really.

Anyways, you'd figure with the amount of snow, this place would be awesome. Not so. The mountain was small. 2 little kiddy runs, which were too flat to have fun on. A little higher up the mountain, it got better, but as I said, the mountain was way too small. An expert rider can spend

I'll give this place 4 stars because of the snow when we went because it was sweet. It is probably a 3 resort though as it's not that big a place.

Even though we went on New years day, it wasn't particularly crowded so we had a real good time out there with hardly any wait at all for any lifts.

I can only imagine that mid-week it is very quiet.

Nice place for a day

I enjoyed it more as the day went on. After 2pm most of the morning crowds had left. The afternoon was very enjoyable, however the soft snow on the family run meant a lot of *slow snowboaders* headed up the hill and made things a little too crowded on the narrower, steeper gerende.

Heavy snow during the middle of the day soaked up some slush and the surface dried out, becoming 'sandy' towards the afternoon.

A nice day out with
