Twin planks
Paid a visit to Aizu Kogen Takahata, a skier-only resort in Fukushima. I was curious about what a skier-only place would be like. What kind of secret goodies would be on tap?

Slinging my two planks over my shoulder, I employed bipedal locomotion over the squirrel-encrusted bridge from the parking lot to the base area.

There are 4 lifts, all fixed pair lifts, with one up from the base and the other three reachable from up there. There was a

Small but satisfyingly steep
Took the drive through Tochigi on regular roads, past Shiobara Onsen, to Aizu Kogen Daikura.
That part of southern Fukushima had always seemed hard to get to, but in fact it takes not much more time to reach than it does to get to the Bandai-area ski areas using the expressway.

Snowed constantly all day. Visibility sufficient for the most part, wind not as bad as predicted (though gusted occasionally), lots of fresh snow.

The base area is split into two parts, the

Aizu Kogen Daikura review by Canadian Freerider
This station is small, but has some charm to offer. Despite being a week-end, it was totally uncrowded.

The snow coverage was good, but the surface was hard and quick. The weather was slightly chilly. The last top section for expert only was not open.

The tracks are short, but the ski area is wide. The tracks are wide and well groomed which is ideal for carving. Indeed, I never saw such a high proportion of alpine

Aizu Kogen Daikura review by Canadian Freerider
It is my 2nd experience in this small, but charming resort. This time, it was after a night of snow fall and it made a huge difference.

The snow conditions were excellent. Groomed on most of the tracks with some terrain left virgin, including the top expert section. However, the top section is accessible only by an aged monoplace lift. The powder was light and very fluffy. There was plenty of place to do freeriding in

Aizu Kogen Daikura review
Our first time to Daikura and we were very impressed. Of course we picked a blizzard day, but by lunch time the sun had come out and the fresh snow that had fallen all morning made for some incredible powder runs in the afternoon.

The lifts were good and relatively short ques (especially compared to Hunter) and the runs at the top were great. If your game try the experts only course, take a right when you get right to the

If you're a boarder, stay away from this place - it is really flat so if there is a lot of powder you're in trouble, and the top lift is closed to boarders as they reackon it's too narrow at the top so boarders would have trouble. Pretty stupid if you ask me, although if your a skier it would be relly nice - no boarders to bother you, plus it looks fairly step and challenging.

There is a

Aizu Kogen Takatsue review by danz
I like Takatsue...and it has wonderful potential...if only they would run the lift going to the top..its always closed, yet has at least 1/3 of the mtn vert...anyway, the tree riding is superb with good snow when I was there, and there is an awesome cut trail that has been abandoned by the resort, which means fresh lines all day after a 10min hike...deceptively big, but most of the resort is not worth riding...stick to the top areas and have

Decent place this.

Quite a few runs.

Not busy.

Nothing to shout about but one of the better in the Fukushima region
