Uber snowfall
This January has seen Yuzawa area get dumped on and not wanting to miss out on the snowfall I've been itching to get away. My usual spot, Kagura, was forecast to get buffeted by some strong winds so I had a look around the Yuzawa, Minamiuonuma area for an alternative spot. I've pretty much hit all the other Yuzawa places and wasn't feeling the love for them so I decided to try out Hakkaisan. I'd heard pretty good things about

Fresh moguls, come and get 'em!
Weather forecast was not the greatest: rain. I hoped it would be snow at the top. As it turned out, while most of the day it was raining at lower elevations, at upper elevations it was indeed occasional, wettish flurries. So that was good. Looking up from the lower base station after parking in the first parking lot, clouds hid the top of the resort.

I didn't realize that the ropeway station is actually up the hill from there. One should

Powder Hounds Heaven
We discovered Hakkaisan last season, enjoyed it immensely & are off to another fine start this year.

This Niigata area has seen tons of fine snow, now about 3m.

The ropeway speeds up the 800m vertical in a few minutes, then it is clear sailing through the un-groomed steep runs or between the trees, as you wish.

This is generally an expert class mountain, so it is a pleasure to watch to locals scream through the terrain with abandon. Few

A fine place to spend a day
I have been to Muikamachi Hakkaisan a few times. This time was courtesty of SnowJapan and Minamiuonuma as I used the ticket I won on the site.

I timed it well.

This season was not classic by any means in terms of snowfall, but I was waiting to go to Hakkaisan in as perfect as possible conditions. Lots of fresh snow and decent weather. That's what I got.

Hakkaisan is a long and fairly narrow resort. Though having

A fine place to visit
Muikamachi Hakkaisan is a Prince resort. But don't let that put you off!

But seriously. Hakkaisan has it's fans and I can see why. It's basically one bit long resort with a few options on coming down. There's some groomed intermediate slopes, the ungroomed quite to form mogul runs and the winding road course down the side. The latter is surprisingly fun as there are lots of 'short cuts' through the untouched snow which is a

Let's Hakkaisan
I came here after winning a free ticket in a SnowJapan giveaway! & though it had rained the day before, I was hoping that meant fresh snow higher up!

I took the 08.00 train from Echigo-Yuzawa station and arrived at Muikamachi station in time for the 08.30 bus to the resort. This is a public bus and cost 410Yen + an extra 100Yen if carrying a board or skis.

The top of the resort is accessed by a super-fast ropeway.

Muikamachi Hakkaisan review by BC Rocky
Grew up in the Rockies and pacific northwest US and CAN. Skied and boarded most of my life so about 35+ years.

This place is good for beginners or for serious bumps skiers. Boring at the bottom, steep with moguls at the top.

Step off piste into heavy thick trees for a second and your dealing with three or four ski patrol. Zero to no facilities at the bottom, slow lifts and long lines. Quite difficult to get to.

Went

Are you a skier who likes moguls?

Go here.

There is a long long mogul run down the mountain that will test even the strongest knees.

Decent place for mogul-fiends, but not much to choose from for others.

Check out those huge moguls at this resort.

Unbelievable!

Goes on for ever.

Only go here when you have lots of energy and your knees and legs are in good condition!

One of those resorts that only better skiers should go to.

There is a beginners slope and a winding road down from the top but apart from that, beginners will get frustrated. For more advanced skiers - especially those who live moguls - you will be in heaven. 2 main long fairly steep runs coming down from the top of the resort and one of them is almost all moguls on a good day.

Go on a day when your
