Great Resort |
We were lucky to have very light snowfall during our visit there in March (-4 cm per day), but it wasn't enough to refresh the slopes overnight. Snow was also icy instead of powder, but we were there in Spring, so even having snowfall was a fortunate blessing indeed.
I am a beginner skier, so kept mainly to the green slopes such as Kogen & Family. With the snow conditions as it was, it was a challenge to me but it |

Perfect powder for endless tree skiing |
Before visiting Niseko I'd read a lot about their snow fall and the quality of the snow and our visit didn't disappoint (and this is meant to be a below par season)!
We had close to a metre and a half of snow fall during our stay leading to some amazing days on the hill. I've been lucky enough to ski across a number of countries and this was hands down the best snow I've seen.
The four mountains provide good |

A unique experience, loved every minute of it! |
Let's start at the beginning, we flew from Amsterdam to Tokyo first and stayed there for two days to see something of the city. Loved every minute of it, from the patchinko halls to a standing bar where we had "cloudy sake" with the locals. Brilliant :)
From Tokyo we did an overland to Niseko, we started with a Shinkansen bullet train which was a unique experience. Gradually the trains got smaller and the heaps of snow got larger. The past |

Tracked out in record time |
I have been snowboarding in Niseko since 1999 and have spent the past 5 seasons (Jan & Feb) there.
The snowfall is amazing but so are the crowds. The point of chasing powder is to ride it when it is fresh and untracked....this is becoming increasingly difficult at all 4 Niseko united resorts and Moiwa. The crowds have stomped on every bit of untracked powder across all resorts by approximately 10.30am. After 5 seasons I know the resorts and the |

Dry/wet spell |
Niseko is excellent.... when the snow is great.
It needs those snow conditions though - more than other places, I think.
Let me explain.
Places like the 'other famous places' on Honshu have a lot to offer and it isn't just all about the snow. Steep terrain, lots of different resorts in a small area, not mad crazy cold temperatures, lots of cultural attractions nearby, monkeys soaking in onsen.... that kind of thing.
Niseko, I feel, is all about the snow... |

Powder Kingdom |
This was my third year visiting Niseko and everytime I come here there is always something new to experience. I was lucky enough to win an all mountain day pass through the SnowJapan prize draw which I put to good use!
Resorts:
The mountain is split into 4 resorts from left to right: Annupuri, Niseko Village, Grand Hirafu and Hanazono. Purchasing an all mountain pass will allow you access to all 4 resorts. There is also a smaller less frequented resort called Moiwa |

First weekend of the season |
Two weeks late but we can forgive Niseko that.
Snow conditions were pretty good over the opening weekend, though not mid-season great. Not that you would probably expect that in the first half of Niseko.
Still quiet before the hordes arrive, so I am hoping for some more snow to allow the mountain to fully open before it gets too busy.
Peak season Niseko is too busy for my liking so it's an early and late season place for me. |

Still the best |
What has not been said about Niseko Grand Hirafu (and connecting).
When it's on - which is often - it really is simply the best.
It may not be the steepest. It may get very busy. It may get too many, er, boisterous foreigners spoiling things a bit. It may get windy affecting lifts too often.
But the snow is just awesome and hard to beat.
Great restaurants and nightlife too.
Just don't go expecting a quaint traditional Japanese experience |

Snow best I have experienced |
Just come back from a fantastic week up in Hokkaido and specifically Niseko. It was my first time there and wondered if the snow could really live up to the reputation. It did. We got such consistent and quality snow, it almost felt not possible! Truly excellent and better than anywhere else I have experienced in Japan.
I have nothing against foreigners, I am one myself, but Niseko is no totally overwhelmed with international guests that it almost doesn't feel like Japan any |

RECENT Niseko trip |
2nd trip here
Have been to hakuba several times but also nozawa onsen, myoko kogen all the resorts in hakuba, tomminen, ashidake and furano.
Was a bit slushy on the road when we arrived but got 5 - 20cm everyday after.
Very windy for a few days which shut nearly the WHOLE mountain at times.
Got thru the gates and over the top twice into backbowl.
Was busy ++ especially when upper lifts shut due to the wind, gondola queue 10min at times! Mind you mostly |

Niseko Grand Hirafu review btyMick Rich |
I had heard many things about Niseko, both good and bad, so after 2 seasons based in Furano, decided I should see it for myself.
With a mid-March arrival, I was expecting less crowds and Spring-like conditions but I hadn't bargained on the Tohoku earthquake and consequent exodus of people and cancellations.
I based myself in Hirafu and spent the first few days exploring the Hirafu and Hanazono ski areas, having scored a cheap Hirafu pass. The slopes were relatively quiet |
