Too Much Tree Fun
After 2 days at Niseko I took one of the buses to Rusutsu to give that a go (bus transfer is easy from the transportation hub with two different outfits). The area base is kind of different since a smallish set of runs is at the resort/hotel base, but the better skiing is on the adjacent mountain which you ride a gondola to access, and then a chair or two to get where you want to go.

I thought the

Great powder and few people to share it with!
Rusutsu is an interesting place to visit and ski.

It is a relatively small area compared with Niseko, for example, but the lack of terrain is more than made up for by the powder which is more easily accessible than Niseko where you need to wait for the gate to open to the top of the mountain.

Outside of the resort Hotel and Towers, there is limited accommodation in Pension type B&B"s.

We stayed in Pension Lilla Huset which is located across the

I took a day trip to Rusutsu from Niseko the other day. I had heard good things about the resort and as I've been riding Hirafu for 3 days in a row, a change of scene was due plus a bit of overnight snow had been forecast. When I arrived I found 5-10cm of fresh snow and that the slopes seemed to be in better condition than Hirafu.

Anyway, here are my thoughts:-

The good things:-

Rusutsu
I took a day trip to Rusutsu from Niseko using the local bus from Kutchan, as the shuttle bus service had stopped. When I arrived I found 5-10cm of fresh snow and that the slopes seemed to be in better condition than Hirafu.

Anyway, here are my thoughts:-

The good things:-

1. The trees! I love tree runs and Rusutsu didn't disappoint! My favourite sections were on Mt Isola, namely around Heavenly Ridge and Steamboat B. Both had

Lovely Resort BUT, only a couple of pensions to stay at and they are uncontactable from Australia so that only leaves the big Rusutsu 4 star hotel, which is expensive. The main problem I have is you dont get a chance to choose your room, my room number was 1718 which ment that I had 8 levels, 2 lift changes and about 1200 metres of walking to get to the Gondola which is part of a two Gondola system, So

Skied everywhere in the world, over 30 years, hard core skier, 62 years young, love skiing here as the price of accomodation keeps aussie drunken fools away, you will need at least 7 days here allowing for bad weather as it will happen at some stage, yes it does not have the steeps of France etc etc but the snow is consistant, not the lightest in the world but good.

Take the best ski gear you can with you, credit cards are

This was my second stay at Rusutsu and once again I did not leave disappointed.

I will say from the outset that I do not care about Apres Ski or the Japan experience (I have been living in Japan for six years), all I care about is snowboarding in powder and that is pretty much what I did for seven of the eight days I snowboarded at Rusutsu.

Basically, most of my time on the mountain was spent off-piste inbetween the

By far the greatest place I have ever skied not only in Japan but also in American and Europe.

Large resort with many things to offer. Two complete sides connected by a gondola. Plenty to see and do. Best powder snow I have ever seen, so soft you can glide right through it. Lots of off trail skiing where you can find your own adventure. Fantastic runs if that is more your alley. Plenty of lifts with very short lines,

When my wife and I first visited Rusutsu during mid Dec07, we experienced wonderful powder and had a really great time.

The slopes can be found on 3 mountains and the runs are much more interesting at Mt Isola (best) and East Mtn. The rooms at Rusutsu Resort are large and comfortable but pricey. In Dec08, our kids joined us as well.

While the snow wasn't as good and some runs especially the blacks were not opened, we had a

Speend 4 days in the resort. Got a north wing room, and ski locker, and needed to walk 10 to 15 mins to go to ski school or eggs to go to Isola. (carring the kids skis get really tiring). The resort is really badly designed, main hotel far from slopes. have to go up and down with ski shoes...etc

The snow was ok, 2 days great, 1 day icy and gravel, not so good.

The slopes are too easy. The reds

6 days straight of beautiful sunshine (one half day of fog on top) following on from overnight Japanese dustings (5-15cm per night) made for a fantastic skiing week for my family and I.

Third year running at Rusutsu, and those who say "not enough runs" evidently don't use the whole mountain. Groomed terrain immaculate (for the little we were on it), and tree skiing, while not the usual waist deep powder, still had enough of the soft stuff

3rd time at Rusutsu and it did not disappoint.

Two perfect days on Mt Isola followed by night skiing on West Mt. Mt Isola and East Mt have longer cruising runs with panoramic views. West Mt has short sharp runs with numerous variations and is close to North / South Wings.

English signage and information are getting better. Kids park, wave pool and water slide kept the kids busy. Resort is expensive but overall good value given
