Up high.
Terakoya is one of the higher areas of the sprawling Shiga Kogen ski area. A smallish area which can be easily accessed from the Ichinose Family resort in the central section of Shiga Kogen.

Shiga in general appeals to me for a number of reasons. Although it is very popular among Japanese tourists and school groups, it is one of the last resort areas in Nagano-ken that is not crawling with foreign tourists and pension owners. Parking can be tough at

Terakoya is a hidden gem of the Shiga area. Best powder I've seen on Honshu. Even had a practice slalom course.

Only problem is getting in and out from Ichinose Family is limited and the lifts here close relatively early

Really nice small field.

I felt like Alice in Wonderland up there.

The off piste terrain isn't steep but its technical and full of surprises.

This was my favourite part of Shiga Kogen
