Well equipped and fairly diverse.
Yakebitaiyama is one of the larger Shiga Kogen areas and one of the better equipped. It's run by Prince so there's a bit more money behind than some of the other areas.

The resort is fairly well laid out and good for skiers and snowboarders since there wasn't all that much walking required. There aren't many lifts though. The two gondolas are the main ways of getting around the mountain and they do a good job when it isn't too busy.

A bit of a let down...
Thanks to another year of SJ giveaways, my buddy 'Neck' and I won lift tickets to Yakebitayama, one of the bigger and more popular resorts in the Shiga Kogen area.

Now, I go up to Shiga Kogen fairly often each season, but never to Yakebitai. Mainly due to the fact I can count on awesome off-piste terrain at other areas, and it's such a mission to drive up there sometimes I'd rather have a guaranteed good day than search out

High but flat
I was lucky enough to win a ticket for Yakebitaiyama from one of the amazing SnowJapan giveaways. Thanks! I decided to make use of the ticket almost as soon as it arrived. The forecast was for significant snowfall up in Shiga that coming weekend, so I planned a Saturday trip up there with my partner in crime, 'Bushiman'.

I have previously held a season pass for the entire Shiga area for a few seasons. I really like the area as it

Big but busy
I visited Yakebi (as it's affectionately known) in early to mid March. There was perhaps a very light dusting over night but some fresh left over from the day before.

Beautiful blue sky and great views. I think the views from the Ichinose area are a bit better as you can see Nagano and the massive wall of the alps but it's still pretty good.

It was very busy in the morning with very long queues for the gondolas but the staff

Yakebitaiyama review by Ski Dude
Snow here is awesome, runs also excellent with plenty of variety. Did pretty much all with a few trips through the terrain park. Snuck across to Okushiga and Ichinose but the runs here were better.

The Prince Hotel West Wing however is CRAP.

Food was rubbish and over priced more than usually expected.\r\nRooms were drab, with peeling wall paper and a CRT tv with a VCR - I have not seen one in 11 years! The hair dryer in the room sounded

We went up to Shiga Kogen on the 6th and 7th, and had a great time exploring this huge area. Favorites were:

Yakebitaiyama

Mammoth

Ichinose and that middle area

Okushiga Kogen is just for skiers, so not too good for boarders :

The snow was excellent, and lots of it. Great views yesterday with clear weather - couldn't have been much better.

Shiga is the best place I've been yet.

So many places to ride and great conditions.

The scenery is stunning.

They don't play music on the runs, so you can hear what's important.

I can't wait to go back

Went there early season. Seemed to be a distinct lack of steep slopes.

The slopes were also pretty short. I'd like to check it out sometime in mid season to see what the off piste is like but it looked like the trees were a bit tight for that.

Anyway, I'd go for Hakuba if you're into challenging powder riding

This is one of the most beautiful ski site I've ever been to. The view is far and grand. The runs are long and smooth with fasinating scenery along. It makes me feel that I'm in "winter" paradise.

Feeling relaxed and quite.

Worth to go again and again.

This is the part of Shiga Kogen that was host to some of the Olympic events.

Great to be able to ski an Olympic course!
