Small. Powder. Breathtaking scenery.
This is a review of the time I went there last season. It was a clear day, the sun was out, and there had been 30cm of fresh snowfall the night before.

Awesome conditions and lots of untouched powder. Hardly any people there as it was a weekday (wonder how busy it gets on a weeked), which just added to the awesomeness of it.

For anyone that doesn't know, it's a small place. But you get to

Tanigawadake Tenjindaira review
I wanted to check out a Gunma resort this winter and finally made it to Tenjin on the last day of March. I was therefore expecting Spring conditons but winter had returned for the day and it dumped non-stop!

Here are my thoughts:-

1.
The back country terrain (for which Tenjin is famous) looked good but end-of-season high avalanche risk meant that it was all closed. Not that I could have really enjoyed it with little or no visibility!

2.
If

Let's Tenjin!
I wanted to check out a Gunma resort on my way back from Hokkaido and finally made it to Tenjin on the last day of March. I was therefore expecting Spring conditons but winter had returned for the day and it dumped non-stop!

We picked the wrong day to check out Tenjin methinks!

It was beautiful and sunny but the snow was crud. In the morning the slopes were icy and bulletproof. I also didn't realise that the resort is tiny, with only 3 uplifts (4 including the ropeway). I was cursing and swearing this place in the morning and at that point had intended to assign -1 stars out of 5. However after lunch the slopes had softened in the sun and

I love Tenjin but a lot of people wouldn't . The piste skiing is limited, and there are no terrain parks!

However the back country and off piste is brilliant. Lots of fresh powder all on nice steep runs through the tree's. The tree's get a little tight at times though so be careful! There are lots of off piste runs but they tend to get tracked out towards the end of the day. Also due to the fact some parts

I am a local rider in Minakami that has been riding Tenjin for the past 13 years.

As the on piste terrain is very limited, it is likey that intermediate to advanced on piste riders would start to get bored by the end of the day unless you are into powder (which there can be a lot of on piste). There is one good run for beginners but because of the huge amounts of snow and sometimes windy conditions it is

Tenjin. I too have heard lots of really good things about this place.

Firstly, the marked runs are very, very short and hardly in abundance. But people go to tenjin to ride the bc. From what I've seen it's good in comparison to anything else in gunma, there are good, steep-ish slopes in very close proximity to the chair-lift. Patrol were really lax when I have been.

Tenjin also gets good snow consistently, from what I've heard. So, if you get there

For all I had heard about Tenjin and it's legendary back country boarding, I was thoroughly disappointed and suprised to pay 6000 yen for short, slushy back country runs.

If you know your powder, you are far better off heading up to Hokkaido, where the powder is dry and fluffy.

Leave Tenjin to the amateurs

There was 380cm of snow at the resort, the previous time I visited in January there was 250cm of snow.

If you like powder and want to remain in the Tokyo area, its the only place to be! And I mean deep powder hills.

Ski Patrol hardly exists, and you can hike to peaks to board down. This resort is only 14km from the expressway and has 24 hour indoor parking for y1,000.

Go early, park inside, and take a

Ok why the good comments?

As has already been written - a great place if you actively seek backcountry skiing & boarding in deep powder (and have experience in this).

However, if you are a first-timer for backcountry, go somewhere else because you could quite easily end up in a bad situation - the Tanigawadake area is serious mountain country for Japan.

If you do accept the challenge, then the patrollers may chase you but ignore them and seek out

Considering i went late in the season, this resort was OK. The snow was fairly slushy but you could still have fun on it. Out-of-bounds areas definitely weren't worth skiing on.

I went for 3 days - too long - the ski area is pretty small and it got boring quickly.

I stayed in the Kankou Centre on the mountain itself (the only accomm. up top) which was very cheap - i think Y4000 for the night inc.

This place seems to get great reviews from people, but personally I can't figure out why. Seems small and uninteresting to me - even though the views are great. A big disappointment for me. If anyone can explain why it has such a good rep, I want to hear it
