Definitely worth a visit!
Last year my buddy and I both won tickets to visit White World, and this year thanks to another SJ Giveaway we were lucky enough to snaffle some more...

This place is a gem.

It's like how Hakuba Cortina used to be before the word got out. Great out-of-bounds terrain, easily accessed, straight forward exits back to piste. Nobody else going anywhere near the trees... Coming from riding in Nagano & Niigata, this is completely unheard of.

So, yeah, the off-piste is a

Worth the extra drive time.
White World Oze Iwakura is a nice sized resort in Katshina Village, Gunma Prefecture. They have a nice variety of runs for both intermediate and advanced riders. There are also a few runs for beginners at the bottom, but I think the hill is more geared toward intermediate riders.

Though it is a little harder to get to from Tokyo than some of the other hills in Gunma and Yuzawa, I think that people who make the trip will not be

YES!
Sooooo happy I discovered Iwakura this year... my own fault for ignoring the signs on the way to Marunuma.

I've already been twice this season and am planning to go again soon.

I live in Tokyo, but I've come to like this place so much that I'd probably consider getting a season pass... but alas, I tend to cheat on my favorite ski-jo's.

All you really need to know is Gondola + Milky Way. Best combo ever

18-19 Jan 2015 Powder!!!
Arrived early Sunday to find the normal Sunday crowds PLUS a ski competition, both making the lifts a bit crowded at first and some slopes closed to the public.

Lift lines went way down by 9AM so all was good. It must have dumped snow all night Saturday 17 Jan 15 as there was about 2-3 feet of POW POW on the fringes (and on some of less used groomers) on Sunday and it was cloudy to sunny all

Awesome weekday powder
Not all the lifts were open given it was so early in the season on a week day but lift ticket was 3100 Yen INCLUDING a visit to the ONSEN in the hotel at the bottom of the slope.

The main gondola took us to the top where Virgin Powder was available all day on 5-6 intermediate slopes. The fringes of most of the Pistes/gelendes had 3-4 feet of untouched powder where we spent the entire day. No Ice

Oze Iwakura - The 'White World' Indeed!
Having spent the last 10+ years riding your typical big/popular resorts in Nagano/Niigata/Hokkaido, this season I fancied a change...
Pre-season I'd spent a good long while looking at Google Earth, and topographical maps searching for the kind of resort I like... Something a long the lines of Hakuba Cortina.

For any of you that have ridden at Cortina, you'll know that the whole resort centers around a large bowl with everything (pretty much) funneling down to one run in the middle.

Nice place
I have been to White World a few times now and it's one of those places that I would like to go to once a season maybe.

About 90 minutes drive from where I live, it's to the east of, and about 40 minutes drive from, the Numata IC on the Kanetsu Expressway.

There's a great big car park that you get to before the skijo - in fact you can't see the skijo before you actually get

A nice resort not yet discovered by the international crowd
White World Oze Iwakura is a nice ski resort which is popular with Japanese people but not yet discovered by the overseas crowd.

It is a good sized hill with a lot of variety. Though the bottom of the hill is flat enough for beginners, I would say Iwakura is more of an intermediate to advanced skijo. Though I am a snowboarder and have had some great days there I would say Iwakura caters more to skiers especially the mogul

Quite a large hidden gem.
White World is about 40 minutes from the Numata IC on the Kanetsu Expressway, located in the Katashina village area of Gunma.

Quite a big place and obviously quite popular with the half full car park already early on a Saturday morning, though people were almost all Japanese so it's not got the gaijin crowd yet.

Worth a shufty though as it's got some nice long runs and the snow was great when we were there.

This season there's a new tunnel that

White World Oze Iwakura review
Three stars are from the average of:

Park *
Piste *****
Off-Piste **

reaking the review into these 3 sections: Starting with the good.

Piste:

With close to 700 meters vertical rise out of the gondola and with 13 lifts and 18 trails Iwakura offers something for everyone.

There are a couple of dedicated mogul runs, but if moguls aren't for you then it's no problem. I recommend the 2.8 Km Milky Way intermediate run. Which takes you back to the base of the gondola. If you

White World Oze Iwakura review by Rion
Overall I thought it was fun. I didn't notice much of a notice between the black trails, and the red trails. This site says 20% snowboarders, but I saw more boarders than skiers while I was there. Everything seemed really nice. There was a good view from the top of the mountains. Good long rides to the bottom of the mountains. I went on a weekday, there was some kids going through ski school. they got in my way a
