Shiga Kogen Yakebitaiyama

Well equipped and fairly diverse.
Yakebitaiyama is one of the larger Shiga Kogen areas and one of the better equipped. It's run by Prince so there's a bit more money behind than some of the other areas.

The resort is fairly well laid out and good for skiers and snowboarders since there wasn't all that much walking required. There aren't many lifts though. The two gondolas are the main ways of getting around the mountain and they do a good job when it isn't too busy.

A bit of a let down...
Thanks to another year of SJ giveaways, my buddy 'Neck' and I won lift tickets to Yakebitayama, one of the bigger and more popular resorts in the Shiga Kogen area.

Now, I go up to Shiga Kogen fairly often each season, but never to Yakebitai. Mainly due to the fact I can count on awesome off-piste terrain at other areas, and it's such a mission to drive up there sometimes I'd rather have a guaranteed good day than search out

High but flat
I was lucky enough to win a ticket for Yakebitaiyama from one of the amazing SnowJapan giveaways. Thanks! I decided to make use of the ticket almost as soon as it arrived. The forecast was for significant snowfall up in Shiga that coming weekend, so I planned a Saturday trip up there with my partner in crime, 'Bushiman'.

I have previously held a season pass for the entire Shiga area for a few seasons. I really like the area as it

Ryuoo Ski Park

Probably better midweek
This was my second time visiting Ryuoo this year and I really wanted to enjoy the place but it has too many points against it to make it worth visiting.

The basic layout of the resort is a long line, from the carpark and base center it's quite far to the middle of the resort. In the morning all of the lift lines are long with people climbing up the mountain. And if you want to go to the top you

First heavy snow of the season
I visited Ryuo on one of their first weekends of the season last year. There had been heavy snow the night before but sadly there wasn't much of a base before that so many areas were still closed despite looking very tempting.

It was pretty busy with a lot of university aged people around. Most car number plates were from Tokyo and other parts of Kanto.

From the parking area it is a bit of an awkward journey to the slopes and

Shiga Kogen Terakoya

Up high.
Terakoya is one of the higher areas of the sprawling Shiga Kogen ski area. A smallish area which can be easily accessed from the Ichinose Family resort in the central section of Shiga Kogen.

Shiga in general appeals to me for a number of reasons. Although it is very popular among Japanese tourists and school groups, it is one of the last resort areas in Nagano-ken that is not crawling with foreign tourists and pension owners. Parking can be tough at

Ryuoo - Beautiful views and great riding for all levels!
Ryuoo is a great skijo with amazing terrain for riders of all levels. It is located between Shiga Kogen and Nozawa Onsen, but seems much less popular especially with international riders. For the beginner rider the “Sky Land” area offers some of the best easy high elevation terrain that I have ever seen. The views are amazing and the terrain is diverse enough for beginner and intermediate riders to have a great day and if conditions permit, even experience that

Big but busy
I visited Yakebi (as it's affectionately known) in early to mid March. There was perhaps a very light dusting over night but some fresh left over from the day before.

Beautiful blue sky and great views. I think the views from the Ichinose area are a bit better as you can see Nagano and the massive wall of the alps but it's still pretty good.

It was very busy in the morning with very long queues for the gondolas but the staff

A high elevation skijo with a little something for everyone!
Ryuoo is a very nice skijo with lots of riding options for all levels and styles. There are some very nice beginner and intermediate runs at the top of the skijo above the gondola which offer great views and beautiful scenery as well as high elevation snow for less experienced riders. There is an amazing wall which offers steep ungroomed runs and nice tree lines for the advanced riders as well as a variety of park features of varying difficulty

Sorry this run is closed for private use.
This was my first time to visit Yomase Onsen.

On the first day I had an enjoyable time. The quad is fast and there was no long queues.

Some of the courses were closed for club slalom practice but only about 2/5th of the courses so there was still plenty of places to slide. However on the third day over half or even close to three quartets of the runs were closed for slalom practice. Everyone

Definitely worth a visit
Ryuoo Ski Park is definitely worth a visit.

If you are going to be in Nozawa or Shiga Kogen or Myoko for a time, it can easily be done as a day trip and makes a change.

There's 2 bits really but bottom area and the top area, serviced by a large Ropeway. Oh, and the but connecting them.

Top area is really great especially after fresh snow. Some very nice runs and coming down is fun too.

It doesn't get as

Let's Ryuoo Ski Park
Having planned (and failed) to visit Ryuoo the previous season, I finally made it there this year, courtesy of a free ticket in a SnowJapan Giveaway - thanks guys!

I can keep this review fairly short thanks to the fantastically-detailed review by dyna8800, which is recommended reading for anyone thinking of visiting Ryuoo.

Transportation:-

Travelling from Hakuba, I took the train to Nagano station, where there's a choice of a train or bus connection, though the latter only runs on
