Great place for skiers.

Bad place for boarders (not allowed).

If you are a skier, head over this area when you hit Shiga Kogen - it is worth it.

Yomase Onsen

Review submitted by Dan before 2006
A little resort tucked in below Shiga Kogen. In early winter you can still see the farm crops poking out through the snow on the first lift. Just a couple or three chairs, but the top one is steep and consistent, and fun in powder. This resort is home to the legendary slalom racer Toshihiro Kaiwa, although I hear he's totally sick of skiing these days and prefers golf. Still, you get to see some surprisingly good racers training here,

Shiga Kogen Yokoteyama

Shiga Kogen Yokoteyama review (submitted before 2003)
The top - highest - part of the Shiga Kegen "complex" or resorts. Gets some great snow so good conditions for most of the season, which goes from November until well into May.

Magnificent scenery all round on a good clear day. Now I know why so many people stop to take a moment up there!

Highly recommended to skiers.

Shiga Kogen Yakebitaiyama review (submitted before 2003)
This is one of the most beautiful ski site I've ever been to. The view is far and grand. The runs are long and smooth with fasinating scenery along. It makes me feel that I'm in "winter" paradise.

Feeling relaxed and quite.

Worth to go again and again.

Shiga Kogen Sun Valley

Shiga Kogen Sun Valley review (submitted before 2003)
Small part of the shiga region, but connected to all the other resorts, so it is difficult to separate them.

We stayed in a hotel just at the base of the slopes - Villa Alpen (it's on this site) - and they were really friendly and helpful.

Great snow when we went, not too busy even on a Saturday and Sunday. We went over the where the Olympic events were (Yakebitaiyama) which was well cool.

Ryuoo Ski Park

Ryuoo Ski Park review (submitted before 2003)
Ryuoo Ski Park is hidden at the end of a road that winds up through a very attractive valley. The small car park at the end of the road is not nearly full. A short walk leads up to the ticket area and suddenly the long wide slopes of the main runs are visible. There is a range of tickets available, the best value being a set that includes all lifts and the gondola, lunch and an onsen, for less

This is the part of Shiga Kogen that was host to some of the Olympic events.

Great to be able to ski an Olympic course!

This is a good skiers hill at the far north (?!) of the Shiga Kogen area.

Of course you can go to the other parts of the Shiga Kogen interlinked resort, but I usually stay here and Yakebitaiyama - it has all I want....

Top part of Shiga Kogen - my favorite place to ski in Japan.

If you haven't been, then why not? It has a huge choice of runs, some off-piste action for those looking for that, spectacular views, and friendly natives.

Go there.

Shiga Kogen Giant

Shiga Kogen Giant review (submitted before 2003)
Part of the sprawling mass of valleys that is Shiga Kogen, the Giant is right in the middle, and the nearby hotels are a great place to base yourself from. The Giant itself is an FIS SL course and fairly short, but it links onto the likes of Mt Higashidate and Sun Valley.

Often heavily moguled and icy the Giant is *fast*. Take the quad and then gondola up to the top of Higashidate and come down (carefully!) through the
