Return to Tengendai
I first visited Tengendai Kogen at the end of last season, during Golden Week. The weather was terrible then, but the place looked intriguing, so I wanted to go back some time. Which I did.

I hoped to hit during peak snow monster season, but suspect one week later (or maybe a couple of weeks earlier) would have been better, since I got there after some warm spells. As a result, while I could see some snow monsters looming above

Nighter
Planning to hit somewhere else the next day, I hit the nighter at Yonezawa on the way.

It is a fairly small hill, though most of it is open for the nighter. There was one lift around the back (north side) that was not running, serving a beginner/intermediate slope. The two lifts on the front side were running, both fixed pair lifts. Between the two, almost all of the front-side terrain was available and lit up, including the

Intriguing. Want to visit again under better conditions.
The second (and final) stop after Gassan on our Golden Week tour was Tengendai Kogen, in Yonezawa, Yamagata. The weather forecast for that day was... not so great. Wind and rain setting in. Was tempted to take in some historical sites instead, but the kid was adamant about trying somewhere new, even if the weather sucked. Doesn't take much to convince me, so off we went.

Went through Shirabu Onsen, to the base of the Tengendai Ropeway. Surprisingly small parking lot.

Kuriko Kokusai review by waruihito
Kuriko was my favorite access point to backcountry skiing in the Ou range. A nice tour is to:

1. Take the train from Yonezawa to Itaya

2. Take the bus to Kuriko and ride to the top of the lifts.

3. Tour north over the highway tunnel to the summit of Mount Kuriko (~6km).

4. Do a few laps on Mount Kuriko.

5. Descend into Yonezawa Ski-Jo.

6. Hitchhike back into town.

There is ice to be climbed along the way, as well.

Crico is a very small, old resort with only 4 or 5 lifts which are a bit on the slow side. The runs are short and even their so called black runs are only mildly amusing.

So as you can imagine this place does not crowd and there are no lift lines.

BUT this place is a little gem. With just a short hike off the top lift (20-30 mins) there are some hot little powder fields just sitting there

Excellent place to start boarding on with some nice gentle easy slopes and plenty of early season snow.

After that it can get a bit boring but by then the rest of the slopes are open

A small resort on Route 13 between Yonezawa and Fukushima City, the resort is great for weeknight skiing. On weekends, extra runs are open, but it gets crowded. The snow has been good this season, but I wouldn't recommend going after the end of February. \r\n\r\nThere are three main runs - a beginner's which also has a few jumps on the side, an intermediate which is fun taken fast, and a mogul course/steep slope which is good

Crico is a small but convenient ski park off route 13.

It gets very crowded during holidays, and has short runs which better suit skiers. It is a good place to practice, with some steep slopes and a mogul run thrown in too, but for a more continuous day skiing, with less queues and more powder, you are better off going somewhere else.

Nice alternative to the other resorts in Yamagata.

Uncrowded, good for skiers, but fairly small and nothing outstanding.

Just another one for the "I've been there" diary.
