Shinkansen -ski
First let me say, from the moment you exit the Shinkansen and walk into the Gala Yuzawa information area, you are in the hands of people who really want to help everyone they meet.

There is no question too small or unrelated that will not be considered and they will attempt to help you.

Also, they have thought about how best to help visitors from allowing you to store your empty suitcases for free behind the counter after you have emptied your

Fantastic Teachers, Fantastic Fun
First let me say, if you want elegant, ski magazine resorts this region is not the place for you. This place is the place for freestyle, jump, ski and snow boarding enthusiasts. It is just fun and manageable with some really great teachers. Our lessons were in Japanese so I cannot judge the English lessons. But I will say that three of our teachers knew key words in English and the instruction was worth every word... of which there were

A very good place to go skiing for the first time
We went to Iwappara this last week, luckily after the heavy snowfall.

My kids are learning to ski and this place really is probably the best place to do it. In this area of Japan anyway.

The wide middle area is gentle - and very wide. And on weekdays there's tons of space for everyone.

I headed up to the top area which is much more of a challenge and had fun up there. The snow was great.

Definitely recommend it for both

Tranformed!
I have been to NASPA Ski Garden twice this season with my family.

First time was before the 'big snow' in mid January and... it wasn't good. Not the fault of the ski resort of course but it was raining, there wasn't much snow and generally it was pretty grim.

Second time, it was totally different. Lots of fresh snow and some fantastic conditions. We even got some sunshine during the day.

NASPA Ski Garden is a skiers-only place, and they sell

Spring-slush funanza!
This is my 2nd time to Kandatsu, the previous being a number of years ago. I won a ticket on SJ, of which I'm eternally grateful, but with the crappy all round snow year I had been putting off using it, waiting for better conditions. Those days have passed and so I thought I'd enjoy an end of season, bluebird, spring slush day.

Kandatsu is kinda small and compact but there are a few tree areas that would be good

Let's Iwappara
Today I spent 4+ hours at Iwappara in Yuzawa.

Almost all of that time was spend exclusively at the top area and using just the top quad lift.

I can see why people say that Iwappara is perfect for beginners... it is. That many wide area in the middle of the resort I would say is about as good as you can get to learn on. Wide and gentle.

I quickly made my way up to the top quad and as I said

Let's Yuzawa Kogen
I came here via GALA Yuzawa, having bought a combined ticket (costing 5,100Yen) covering both resorts plus Ishiuchi Maruyama. It's definitely a lot of ground to cover in one day but at least gives you a good workout! From GALA, you take the Landau ropeway from the bottom of the Southern Area. This runs every 20 minutes and takes you across to the main area of Yuzawa Kogen. If you're not coming from GALA, the main area is accessed by

Go to Gala for a ball.
Ok, so this won't be the best review. Reason being that I damaged my knee 2 days before getting to Yuzawa and wasn't able to go boarding, but having snowboarded here for the last 2 years, I think I'm qualified to write a review.

First off, big thanks to the SJ team for the free tickets. As expected, they were waiting for me at my hotel when I arrived. I wish I could have used them properly.

Gala Yuzawa's accessibility is both

A great day out
First off a big thank you to Kandatsu Resort and SnowJapan for the free pass. The free pass meant I went to Kandatsu, the great day we had there means I'll return.

Kandatsu is easy to get too, the entrance road is very close to the Yuzawa IC on the dreaded Kan-etsu expressway. It was quite busy the day we were there and we were directed off to a secondary carpark. If you are driving and have a 2WD avoid this

Let's Kandatsu!
After a gap of a few years, Kandatsu Kogen has had 5 reviews in 2 months and here's another! First off, a BIG thanks to SnowJapan and Kandatsu Kogen for the free ticket - much appreciated!

This was a Sunday trip from Kanagawa with fellow SJ member, onehunga. We had planned to go to Kagura in a bid to avoid the forecast rain but when we popped out of the tunnel on the Kan-etsu expressway we could see Iwappara ski resort

Great Place for Beginners, and probably more!
I had not been skiing for 6 whole years, but I had an awesome time at Kandatsu.

I went with one other guy who hadn't been in almost as long as I had, and one girl who had never skied before. Therefore, we stayed almost exclusively in the beginning areas. That being said, we still had a ton of fun.

The lifts weren't too busy, despite it being a Saturday and we had got to go down plenty of times.

Fun in the snow
It was a soft snowy day on my arrival at the resort and what a good place to take your family.

The resort is very easy to navigate and I had no fear of losing track of my kids, even in the snowy conditions the runs all let out at the bottom into the same place so even though my sons were taking different routes it was easy to keep track of them. This was especially helpful in the
