Snow Wave Park Shiratori Kogen is located in the northern area of Gujo city in the central region of Gifu Prefecture and close to the border with Fukui Prefecture. The relatively open ski run areas at this ski hill are on the northern slopes of Bishamongatake. This resort usually opens in mid November thanks to snow making machines. In summer a golf course replaces the ski runs.
Most of the ski and snowboard resorts in Gujo city are located on the mountains either side of the Tokai Hokuriku Expressway which connects Aichi Prefecture with Toyama Prefecture and the local road Route 156 (Hida Highway) which also runs through the valley. This region is especially popular with people living in or visiting the Kansai regions of western Japan like Nagoya, Gifu, Shiga, Kyoto and Osaka. Train links aren't the most convenient and so this region sees most people arriving by car or bus tours.
Gifu Prefecture is located in the Chubu region of the central region of Honshu island, and it one of only a handful of landlocked prefectures. It shares borders with (from the north) Toyama, Nagano, Aichi, Mie, Shiga, Fukui and Ishikawa. Most of the ski and snowboard resorts in Gifu are located in the northern region of the prefecture – in Gujo city, Takayama city, Hida city and Shirakawa village.
