The Hokkaido Expressway (actually 'Do-o' Expressway in Japanese) connects Sapporo City with the south western regions of Hokkaido(Hakodate) and also with the north west regions of the island (Asahikawa and beyond).
The name of the expressway comes from the words 'Hokkaido' (北海道） and 'Central' （中央).
Sapporo JCT marks the meeting point of these two sections of road and also the point where the Sasson Expressway heads off in a westerly direction towards Otaru.
