Introducing Hokkaido

北海道

Hokkaido is famous for...
Skiing and snowboarding
Niseko
Ainu
Rolling fields
Varied natural beauty and hot springs
.
..amongst other things!

Hokkaido is the second largest island in Japan and it is also the largest prefecture - though Hokkaido is officially 'do' 道 rather than a 'ken' 県 like most of the other 46 regions of Japan.

Hokkaido has more ski and snowboard hills than any other 'prefecture' - nearly 100 of them - though a large number of those are very small local hills with one or two lifts. Still, Hokkaido is home to some of the most famous Japanese ski and snowboard resorts including Niseko and Furano.

The island has a more 'spacious' and somehow different feel than most of the rest of Japan, though like most of Japan it is certainly not lacking in natural beauty!
