Better up top today but not bad down low and people are enjoying it - I have had first hand reports.

The resort is open with 4 lifts in use. More are spinning in the Kitanomine Zone, which is not open but they are still aiming for 18 December and looking at the forecast, I think it's likely. There is no powder to be had but the groomed snow on the Furano Zone is skiable and it isn't raining. Those are good things. Up higher the snow quality is good if you enjoy skiing groomed piste.

Now, to be brutal, Kitanomine Zone looks AWFUL today.

I would show you in a photo but I am now in Furano town and you can't actually see the resort for the low cloud. But I did look over my shoulder this morning and there was grass showing on the lower sections of Kitanomine Zone.

I spoke with resort management yesterday who reckon 20cm is what is required to open the Kitanomine Zone and the forecast makes that look highly likely by this weekend. The weather will decide, but this is encouraging. I thought they would have needed more but not so.

Apparently the bigger white knuckle item is the base at the top of the higher lifts in Kitanomine. Because it is steep right up top of the highest lift in Kitanomine, and because this steep bit is a wind-affected hilltop, the base can be an issue to open top to bottom. I am optimistic because this year we did get a wet base that has frozen in place. But we shall see.

It was 2C when I crossed the Sorachi River at about 8.50am today, and while it wasn't raining, town definitely feels wet. It should reach 4C at 6pm when the rain is forecast. Blurghgh. But at midnight, for those young enough to see it, the forecast predicts a change to snow falling through to morning.

But I have said things like that before and much prefer to see what the weather delivers than to promise it.
Friends just did a reccie at Tokachi, which has fresh snow, was -2C at 10am, and it was snowing. Conditions are white-out due to the low clouds, however.

Tokachi is a 13,000 yen taxi and always an option. Some of the local guiding companies are already running day trips there for hardy backcountry skiers who are happy to earn their turns.

Hope it's good where you are.
