Last night was dry and cold again with a low around - 16, and today promises to be a lot like yesterday. Right now the clouds are out in force, but they should clear on out of here by early evening, leaving behind another breathtaking night sky like we saw last night on the long walk home.

In between festivals, fireworks, and cold temperatures, we've been seeing a lot of things around here lately. About the only thing we aren't seeing is new snow. It has been at least a week since we saw some significant powder accumulation.

The Winter Season in Central Hokkaido got a late start this year, and just when you think you've caught up, we hit another lull. Let's take a look at today's date, January 30th, in past years to see how we measure up.

In comparison to previous years, on this day in 2010 we were looking at 155cm of base. That's 45cm more than what we have right now (currently sitting at 110cm.) On January 30, 2009, we had 100cm at the base, so perhaps we are doing a little better this year than we were two years ago. However, go all the way back to the 2007 and 2008 winter seasons, and there was a hefty 180cm around for both years, putting us a solid 75cm behind as it stands right now.

All that being said, there is still over a meter of fantastic, classy snow out there, waiting to be used. There are no bushes sticking out of odd places. There's more than plenty of cover. The only thing that would be nice is if a fresh snow would come and top us off, because the lower, green runs and the Link Course heading back to Kitanomine Zone are getting chewed up. The good news is, runs like Kuma Otoshi and Kumagera are still knee to waist deep in fresh powder.

If you're looking for a deep-powder experience today, you will be able to find it, but I would advise start looking at the top of the mountain first. More snow come quickly!
