Tragic news in Hakuba today as it emerged that three experienced winter hikers have lost their lives on Mt. Karamatsu, the mountain whose front face forms the Happo-One Ski Area. The first victim was in his late sixties, and appears to have suffered heart-related problems that prevented him from descending. The search party that was called for him and the two acquaintances (both hospitalized) that stayed with him coincidentally found the other two victims, two female climbers in their fifties, for whom no alarm had been raised. The pair apparently climbed Karamatsu (2,700m) on Jan 1 and then camped near the Maruyama cairn (2,400m) where their tent was blown away by gusts estimated at around 180km/h. Both appear to have frozen to death attempting to descend.

As for the conditions at the resorts, fine on-piste conditions were enjoyed at 47, though the queues for the quad were well over 20 minutes around 11:30. Much of the snow off-piste has settled and is heavy. First thing, the park and pipe were in great condition, so it’s definitely worth getting up there early. Wet snow fell from the afternoon onwards, and was coming down quite heavily by the end. It's not snowing right now, but 10cm of fresh has accumulated on the road outside. Expect on-off snow for the next three days, with high winds again tomorrow. Happo speculate that the crowds will have peaked today.
