"... and jocund day
Stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops:"
---- "Romeo and Juliet"

The Bard never spoke truer words. There is a thin mantel of cloud lightly draped on the summit of Nori Kura Dake. Otherwise the main peaks are resplendent this morning. This is fine for the scenery buffs but rather snorkels on the big one for the skiers and boarders keen to shred 'er up (down I mean). The good news is that the weather forecast is calling for precipitation in the form of snow from Saturday to Tuesday.

Our on-slope team of observers report lots of rocks and other obstacles on the lift accessible, groomed terrain. This is especially true at the lower elevations. Below 1,100 m a.s.l. the snow has been going through a diurnal melt-freeze cycle.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m) the 0700 hr. reading is:
Sky: broken clouds
Temperature: Present: -2C
Maximum: 1C (3C was observed at 1345 hrs. at the Sakka base lodge on Happo One)
Minimum: -3C
Wind: light from the south-west
Precipitation: nil
Barometer and trend: 923 hPa and steady
Height of New Snow (HN): trace
Height of Snow on Ground (HS): 22 cm

There will be two teams going outside of the ski-area controlled terrain to do snow-pack studies today so stay tuned for their action packed reports. Snow may be always white but it is always changing.
