Well now the season is officially over and the ski hills in Hakuba are closed. A duly noted fact is that even with this year being one of the lowest snowfalls, the hills were still able to remain open until the final closing days. Not the most terrain available in the last remaining days on the hills but still skiing on snow whatever the conditions is fun.

All in all us locals in Hakuba were not disappointed in the least, albiet one had to wait for the big powder days a little longer than maybe we are usually accustomed to, we were all treated to wonderful turns on numerous occasions.

The backcountry was relatively a stable snowpack all season and reported off-piste accidents were much less than last year. The ski hills (at least the ones high enough to get snow) all had a good season and most likely saw increases in foreign ski tourists.

So now for the die-hards who still need that sliding fix you gotta hike! Still good snow atop the peaks in the Hakuba area so rip some spring lines!

Glad to have hopefully provided a useful service for those to check out the Hakuba Now reports. Stay tuned for more reports on Hakuba events and outdoor related activites throughout the summer and come winter 2007-08 we will be right back in there with daily snow and avalanche hazard reports...... have a brilliant summer !

( See Backcountry Advisory Below )

Avalanche Hazard:

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low (no snow)

People heading backcountry today should be prepared for stronger winds on ridges and colder temps, even though it is sunny and warm in the valley. Take care on descents as exposed patches are prevalent.

Keep in mind, that even though Spring has arrived down here in the valley, it can still be very much like Winter above 1,600m a.s.l., dress and equipe yourself appropriately.

Watch out for big cracks and holes, loose debris on the snow and falling from upper cliffs. Shallow snowpack can slide on the bamboo and will release over rocks and points of tension.
