This morning broke clear and quiet in the Hime Kawa valley. In the Hira Kawa upper valley we watched the three-quarter moon (on the wane) setting behind the peak of Shiro ga Dake as the sun lite the same peaks.

It definitely feels spring like. The overnight freezing is producing a weight carrying crust and the day's warmth creates a pleasant skiing surface where the sun gets directly on the snow. For the back-country traveller: forget about the powder and go for the distyance and the sensational scenery.

Todya's forecast is for a gradual increase in cloudiness with some precipitation in the evening (snow). The day's high temperature in the valley floor is 6C. There is more snow in the forecast over the next few days.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Clear
Temperature: Present: -3.5 C
Maximum: 2.5 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind at surface: Light from the south-west
Winds aloft: Moderate from north-west (snow plume on Shiro ga Dake peak)
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 926 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 78 cm
Foot penetration: 1 cm
Surface: melt/freeze with some faceting evident
Density of surface snow: not measure
Crust: 4 cm
Above tree line: Moderate

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

N.B. hazard will increase with day time warming. The forecast high in the valley is 6 C. Use your thermometer!

Travel Advisory:
A guided group toured from the Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain to the Norikura Lift Company terrain (6 hours of travel time including short breaks). There was a wee tad of "good" skiing from 1,950 m a.s.l. to 1,850 m a.s.l. on a sheltered north-east slope. The rest of the day's travel was on a variety of sun, temperature and wind affected snow surfaces. The full funky-chicken manouver was avoided only by dint of excessive caution. Forget about the powder. As noted above:"go for the distance and the spectacular scenery". Cross-country waxes to augment the climbing skins. Also ski-crampons were handy for travelling on the bone-hard trail up the Happo One ridge the past several days.

The hazard has been kept the same for the past few days as nothing much has changed. Granted the snow pack is getting generally more stable but there are possibly pockets of unstable snow (buried surface hoar, and faceting melt/freeze crusts) that would become more reactive with daily warming.
