This morning the valley is full of milling clouds such that the cloud ceiling varies from 1,500 m a.s.l. to 900 m a.s.l. A very light breeze is barely moving these clouds about. At present theere is no precipitation falling. But 7 cm of snow (density: 150 kg/cubic metre) fell overnight. More precipitation is forecast for this evening. The present temperature is 1.0C with a forecast high of 11C this afternoon. Higher up the mountain the snow should be drier and lighter (snow density of 50 kg/cubic metre is the nice powder). The hard hard-pack should be softened up considerably with this fresh cover.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: -0.5 C
Maximum: 8.0 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind at surface: Light from the east
Winds aloft: Light from north-west (various layers of cloud moving across the upper Hira Kawa valley)
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 916 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 7 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 82 cm
Foot penetration: 20 cm
Surface: melt/freeze crust (precipitation particles 4mm hail or melt/freeze graupel)
Density of surface snow: 150 kg/cubic metre
Crust: 0.5 cm
Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

N.B. hazard will increase with day time warming. The forecast high in the valley is 11C. Use your thermometer!

Travel Advisory:
With 7 cm of heavy new snow observed at the Hira Kawa study plot one would be suspicious that there is deeper and lighter snow at higher elevations. There seems to be a fairly high relative humidity present such that if there is any significant wind (strong enough to move the new snow around) a soft slab would be quickly formed. The past several days moved a lot of the available snow such that the lee slopes were coloured a light grey from the wind transported snow. There are various wind, temperature and sun affected surfaces under this new snow. Yesterday at 840 m a.s.l. (Minegata Lift Company base) to at least 1,055 m (big glade in the forest on a ridge top above Minegata Lift Company terrain) there was 4 mm surface hoar crystals in the open terrain.

The Hazard rating has been increased in the 'above tree line' terrain as there is probably more than 10 cm of new snow overnight and no definite wind information. The temperature is forecast to rise considerably today despite the cloud cover.
