There's snow in the valley and snow on the mountains this morning though the sun is out and there is a fair bit of blue sky up there now. The snow in the village has retreated a bit this morning but the sun is out and it's a fine day... to ski! Or snowboard. Or telemark. Whatever you like, of course.

Yes, today Hakuba has seen the first lift movement of the season and you can now jump on a lift and get out there. See below for the details.

Regarding the forecast it looks like it will be a mixed bunch over the weekend - some clear, some sun perhaps, some sprinklings of snow. All eyes though are on what seems to be coming from late Monday next week. It's looking very positive for some impressive snowfalls into Tuesday, Wednesday and beyond with some cold temperatures and heavy snow. Things might be slim on the ground at the moment, but there's a very good chance that by this time in less than a week things will be looking very different.

Anyway here's the deal with the main resorts:

Hakuba Goryu:
Goryu has opened the Alps no daira Panorama course today with the Gondola and No 1 pair lift moving and taking people up the mountain. They are reporting 25cm of fresh snow and a snow depth of 50cm up top.

Hakuba 47:
47 opened up less than an hour ago at 12 noon. Just the R4 course at the moment with the Gondola and a Pair lift open until 4pm.

Tsugaike Kogen:
This resort has also opened. 60cm is the verdict up top and the Gondola plus the Han-no-ki high speed pair lift is up and running. What's more, today and tomorrow is it free!

Happo isn't open just as yet and there is no official word right now on whether they will be opening tomorrow, but there is a chance of that happening.

Other resorts:

Hakuba Iwatake plans to open for the season on 18th December.

Hakuba Minekata and Hakuba Sanosaka plan to open for the season on 23rd December.
