Hello again from Hakuba in the Japan Alps. The mountains are shrouded in cloud this morning, but every so often they're offering us a glimpse of what looks like the first snowfall on the mountains. Before you grab your board(s), it's only a sprinkling and looks to be at an altitude of 1800m upwards. However, it's getting quite cold now, and winter is definitely on the way.

Despite the ever-present rumours, we've not had any major developments during the off-season. The proposed merger of Hakuba and neighbouring Otari (the area from Tsugaike northwards) was ultimately rejected by residents, so they'll be no change on that front. Several of the resorts have earlybird discounts on their season passes, so you can make a big saving by buying one this month.

We've had a hot summer here, but fairly non-descript weather so far during autumn when the skies normally clear. For hikers, the hut at Karamatsudake will stay open until November 3, while most of the other major ones (Hakuba Sanso, Goryu Sanso) close this weekend. The huts at Tateyama stay open until the Alpen Route closes at the end of November.

The pictures below were taken on Thursday last week on the trail above Happo One Ski Resort. While it's nice to see the snow, autumn in the mountains also has its own appeal.
