This morning broke calm with variable cloudiness. A pair of squirrels were racing around on the surface crust at the Hira Kawa Station. Slowly shifting banks of clouds occasionally closed in a few hundred metres overhead and then a gradual dramatic unveiling of the main range's peaks would emerge. Yesterday the bulk of the lift accessible terrain was enveloped in cloud but the upper elevation terrain were sunny. Thus there are many point released avalanches visible this morning. They were probably triggered by yesterday's sunshine.

The forecast for today is for a clearing and warming toward early afternoon with light north-west winds. No precipitation is in the forecast for today. Yesterday's warm and slushy snow should have firmed up rather well overnight but should soften up with the magic touch of the sun.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds (more than 50% and less than 100% cloud cover)
Temperature: Present: -1.0 C
Maximum: 1.0 C
Minimum: -2.0 C
Wind at surface: Light from the west
Winds aloft: Light from the south-east (slowly moving clouds)
Precipitation: Nil precipitation
Barometer and trend: 915 hPa and rising
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 75 cm
Foot penetration: 30 cm
Surface: Melt freeze conglomerate
Density of surface snow: not measured
Crust: 4 cm
Cloud ceiling: Various from 200 m up

Above tree line: Moderate

Tree line: Low

Below tree line: Low

N.B. The hazard will increase with the daily warming. The lower elevation snow pack is isothermal and may react to a slight increase in temperature especially on steep solar radiation effected slopes (even through cloud cover the sun has an affect).

Travel Advisory:
Yesterday's warming of the upper elevation terrain caused many, many point (loose snow) release avalanches. These started mostly in "non-skiable" terrain but often carried well into "skiable" terrain. The temperatures seemed to get above 0C into the tree line so that all exposures seemed to be effected. Thus the hazard rating of "low" at tree line and below. In the above tree line terrain the sun exposed terrain hazard is probably in the "low" range but where the sun did not affect it the hazard is probably still "moderate". The daily increase in temperature will increase this hazard, maybe substantially. The lower elevation snow pack is isothermal and so might react with surprising results to apparently slight changes in temperature.
