The good news is that there are no line-ups at the lifts. The bad news is that it has been raining "cats and dogs" since yesterday afternoon. It seems like the freezing level is quite high. 66 mm of rain fell in the past 12 hours at the Hira Kawa Weather Station. The rain and clouds are forecast to clear off during the mid-afternoon today. The lower slopes are getting browner and soon to be greener by the day. An excellent effort is being made to maintain the slope coverage.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: 6.0 C
Maximum: not measured
Minimum: not measured
Wind at surface: Very light from the west
Winds aloft: Light from the west
Precipitation: Raining
Barometer and trend: 905 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 41 cm
Water: 66 mm
Foot penetration: 5 cm
Surface: Loose melt freeze crystals , 6 mm crystals, wet
Density of surface snow: not observed
Crust: no crust
Cloud ceiling: down to 1,100 m a.s.l.

Above tree line: High

Tree line: High

Below tree line: Considerable

N.B. Rapid loading in the form of rain to an unknown altitude. Somewhere up there it could be snowing. At a rule of thumb decrease in temperature of 1C per 300 m rise in elevation it could be snowing at 2,600 m a.s.l. With 66 mm of rainfall measured overnight that could be a lot of snow.

Travel Advisory:
Hypothermia is probably a serious threat today with upper elevation temperatures slightly above 0C and the rain falling. A bit of a breeze and some bad personal management and voila: cold, wet and getting worse without intervention.

There has been a rapid, large loading of water onto/into the snowpack. Anytime anything happens quickly to snow it has a tendency to react, often to the point of failure. Cornice failure is a real threat. Isothermal snow point-releases (loose snow avalanches) at elevations up to tree line and all aspects should suspected. Climax (i.e. the entire snowpack to ground being involved) avalanches, especially at lower elevations where the entire snowpack is just 0C (isothermal) should be considered possible.
