The welcome rumble of the roof avalanching this morning was music to the ears after the drought. Not much wind seems associated with this snow fall. Despite the warm temperature the snow is relatively light (60 kg/cubic metres). The visibility at present is good in the valley floor. But the cloud ceiling is variously at from 900 m a.s.l. (top of the ski-jump at the Happo One Lift Company) to 1,200 m a.s.l. (top of the Iwa Take Lift Company mountain). The weather is forecast to clear in the afternoon with a high temperature at 2C. Driving conditions are a tad slick on the side roads.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast (100% could cover)
Temperature: Present: 0.0 C
Maximum: 15.0 C
Minimum: -1.0 C
Wind at surface: Calm
Winds aloft: not observed
Precipitation:Snowing at the rate of 3 cm per hour accumulation per hour (S 3)
Barometer and trend: 920 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 16 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 75 cm
Foot penetration: 20 cm
Surface: New snow, size 2.5 mm and falling in large clumps
Density of surface snow: 60 kg/cubic metre
Crust: not measured
Cloud ceiling: 900 m a.s.l.

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Considerable

Below tree line: Moderate

N.B. The hazard will increase with daily warming, especially with direct sunlight. The amount of wind associated with this snow fall in the upper elevations is at present unknown.

Travel Advisory:
With probably 20 cm or more of new snow at tree line and above with relatively warm temperatures the propensity to form soft slabs is probably high if there is any wind to transport this new snow. The old surface was faceted to a certain extent. The stability will be largely predicated by the presence and quality of shears in this new snow and its adherence to the various surfaces that it is resting on (there is probably a melt freeze crust where the sun directly affected the snow yesterday). Ski-cutting unsupported rolls to check this, if the results don't plunge you into some terrain trap, might be a viable test at this point.

Yesterday: skier controlled, size 1.5 avalanche, 1,800 m a.s.l., north-east exposure, 40 degree slope angle, "Garagara Zawa" on Happo One's north side, wind loaded feature.
